I can't stand them. Downtempo purveyors of audible misery.

You appear to have me mistaken for a Coldplay fan. Either that or you're being very vague and will need to explain yourself. Is this how you perceive everyone who can't stomach generic arena rock?

they make good melody, lyrics...there's nothing to hate :\
I'm sure Pete Waterman or Andrew Lloyd Webber could write a melody, but their music is still contrived and emotionally shallow. Coldplay share a similar predicament. It's easy to say they are just following in the footsteps of Radiohead, but share none of that band's flare for mature songwriting or experimentation.

I would also contest the notion that they can write good lyrics. Case in point.

"O no, I see,

I spun a web, it's tangled up with me,

And I lost my head,

The thought of all the stupid things I said,

O no what's this?

A spider web, and I'm caught in the middle,

I turned to run,

The thought of all the stupid things I've done, "

Are you really so surprised that the kind of insipid self-pity and sentimentality expressed above frequently invite ridicule?

Didn't he once accidentally sneer his face off?

Says a Depeche Mode fan.

Actually I don't particularly like that Joe Satriani tribute group.
