Women's rights activists have strongly criticised producers of Africa's version of Big Brother for not evicting a housemate who punched a female contestant on live television.

Hannington Kuteesa hit Lerato Sengadi after a row inside the Big Brother house in Johannesburg on Tuesday.

Activists says the show's actions may perpetuate the belief that African men have the right to hit women.

TV company M-Net has defended its decision not to remove Mr Kuteesa, from Uganda, saying it is trying to act in the interests of all the housemates.

As his punishment Big Brother ordered him to apologise to South Africa's Ms Sengadi during one of their recordings.

It has also provided counselling to both contestants.

Angry viewers have continued to flood the show's website with messages condemning Mr Kuteesa.

Even though the fight where the women was shoved violently, took a few seconds, it raised a flurry of comments on the Internet about the deeper question of violence toward women.

In a civilised society, men hitting women is almost always wrong -casual violence towards women, for whatever reason, must be eradicated .....

ALright, yeah!!! The guy should be kicked out! I just rewatched the clip without sound, and HE was the aggressive one to be homest, regardless of what was being said.

Rewatch the clip near the fight, with no volume on, and you can tell, he was the one getting aggressive with the body language.

But thats the thing though, for me, I wouldve kicked him out, even if the genders was reversed in this case. The point is, weather its a girl or a boy, it does not come into determining, who was wrong!

actually if you watch that again, he was the one who stood up and got in her face and started pointing his finger at her, then he pushed the side of her head before she pushed him back.

Not really.

The show is based in SA, where a lot of people speak English (a large proportion speak Afrikaans, but that isn't widely spoken in the rest of the continent, which BB would be broadcast to) and most people in sub-Saharan Africa speak either English or French as a first language anyhow as a result of colonial history.

Yeah, a common language is a necessity, as there are an estimated 2,000 languages spoken in Africa .....

Why are you getting all defensive?

I've never met a black African where English was his first language. I was expecting to see them speaking in their own native tongue. After all the show is in Africa. If it was German or French Big Brother and they were speaking English. I would have asked the same question.

There are many reasons, but i'll just point out the main two for you. Physiology and History.


1- Physiology. Men are physically stronger than women. A man hitting a woman will cause more damage than a woman hitting a man. Simple physiology.

2- History. Heterosexual men have a very long history of violence against women. There is no such history of violence by women against heterosexual men.

Fans in Uganda, the home country of ousted Big Brother contestant Hannington Kuteesa, want to know why he was booted out of the fifth series of the reality show.

A report on Uganda Online suggests that Lerato Sengadi - the contestant Kuteesa hit and shoved - is being favoured because she is South African.

The altercation, which left Sengadi with bleeding gums, has sparked outrage among civil-society groups, and M-Net has been criticised for taking so long to evict Kuteesa.

Mbuyiselo Botha, the media relations manager for the Sonke Justice Gender Network, says the pressure exerted by civil society and NGOs led to the resolution of the matter.

Botha says: “Hannington’s eviction sends a strong message to the continent that certain behaviours will not be tolerated.

“It is disappointing that the BBA producers allowed him back on the show knowing that in an earlier Big Brother series he had shoved another woman, Malawian Mzamo Chibambo.”
