Lady Gaga 'Dies' On Twitter For Charity

Monday November 29, 2010

Elizabeth Scott, Sky News Online

Some of Twitter's most popular celebrities have pledged to give up tweeting to raise money for charity, leaving millions of followers bereft.

Stars including Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Usher are to sign off from Facebook and Twitter.

They will only log back on when one million dollars - around £640,000 - is raised for Aids charities.

The Digital Life Sacrifice initiative, organised by Alicia Keys, is in aid of the Keep a Child Alive charity.

It raises money for families in Africa and India affected by HIV/Aids.

Gaga is certain to make a big impact on the campaign.

She is one of the most popular celebrities on Twitter, with over 7 million followers and close to 24 million fans on Facebook.

Kim Kardashian, who is a prolific tweeter, will also join the campaign alongside Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood and Serena Williams.

Each celebrity has filmed a video of their last tweet and testament.

Adverts supporting the campaign will show images of the artists lying in coffins to represent their digital deaths.

Charity ambassador Alicia Keys persuaded a host of celebs to take part.

Keys, who is the co-founder and global ambassador for the charity, said everybody asked had agreed to take part.

The singer, who recently became a mother, is encouraging other famous faces and non-celebs to get involved.

"It just doesn't have to be just because you're a celebrity or something like that. It can be anybody."

The vow of silence begins on World Aids Day on December 1
