BBC 'axes sitcom My Family'

The BBC has reportedly axed long-running sitcom My Family.

The comedy, which focused on the lives of the Harper family, has run since 2000 and will conclude with its 11th series this spring, according to The Sun.

The paper claims that BBC One boss Danny Cohen believes that the time is right to end the show as the children of Ben (Robert Lindsay) and Susan (Zoe Wanamaker) have left home.

"Now they have fled the nest we feel it's time to make room for new comedies," Cohen is quoted as saying. "The 11th series, coming to BBC One later this year, will be the last."

A show source continued: "My Family has done great business but all good things come to an end. It was in danger of becoming a bit stale and that's the last thing we want. Getting rid of My Family will allow us to quit while we're pretty much ahead and free up space in the schedule for new stuff."

Cheryl Taylor, the corporation's controller of Comedy Commissioning, said: "Now almost a generation of British children have grown up with the Harper brood, we're looking to the future with new families and new comedies that we hope will prove equally popular. We look forward to Zoe and Robert continuing to being part of our comedy family in the years to come."

The tenth series, which saw the Harper's youngest son Michael come out as gay, premiered to just over 4m viewers last year.

First few series' were great but it hasn't been as good the last couple of years. Didn't make any sense turning Michael gay either after loads of the stories in the first couple of series.
