Default Are you able to create a professional CV/Resume?

Just wondering this as one of my friends who is 28 has never made a CV in his life and wouldn't know where to start.

It reminded me of when I've managed places the amount of CV's that were handed in that had so many mistakes, missing info, too long, too short, hand written () etc.

So is your CV up to date and professional?

Cvs should be simple, correct and enough to get you in the door. No one ever got a job from a cv, just an interview.

The idea is to convey over 2 pages who you are, how qualified you are and how you can do the job advertised.

Lying on it will only lead to trouble.

I tried to be slightly innovative on mine, it's has a front page (basically with all my contact details at the bottom, name at the top and 'buzz' words in the centre... not sure if it gives off to much of a graduate, 'marketing' idea though :/) then 2 pages of the generic background/education/skills/work experience and on the back my references.

(It all fits technically on one A3 piece of paper, folded into a kind of booklet if that makes sense)

Don't sound like a boring bastard.
Only include skills relevant to the job you are applying for.
Make your CV's colour and design stand out. It's not the 70's anymore. Standard black ink on a white sheet of paper using Times New Roman simply won't cut it. It's okay to be unorthodox.

I've done recruitment and still do with my current job (although haven't for a few months). As a rule of thumb, if starts their "about me" section with anything like "I am honest, reliable, motivated, friendly" then I just give up and move onto the next one.

List qualifications but don't overplay them. True story, when I was recruiting at the end of last year, someone was bragging about their 2:1 Media degree gained at Manchester Metropolitan as though they got a first in English from Oxford. Noone likes a show off and you just look ridiculous.

Print it on tinted colour paper, like a pale blue, yellow, pink or whatever (but not too bright) because it stands out and shows you aren't trying to conform. Being different is good on a CV. Stand out. Even if your CV is ****, the person looking at them will remember "that one on coloured paper" if the rest aren't much better either.

Don't be scared to stick a photo at the top.

List your work history in reverse order, noone cares about where you worked for a month in 2004, what have you been doing for the last year or so? Also don't forget to put why you left your job and be honest about it, so people can get a good idea of the type of person you are.

You'll find loads of places online telling you to do a hobbies section. Don't bother. Noone cares if you enjoy playing football or flower arranging. Basically just leave anything irrelevant off.

I wonder how many TIBB users jot down "Professional poster" on their resume.

When I was in my late teens I once did a joke CV when applying for a restaurant job when in college.

I basically gave joke answers for everything, including for Hobbies and Interests i put pornography, trainspotting, breeding toads etc

I got the job!

I've worked in the same place for 11 years so I don't even think I have a CV saved anywhere but I do CVs up for people at work so could do one up if I needed to
