I decide to purchase this photograph after buying an earlier work, "Photographic Print of Man refusing to do the washing up", and I was not disappointed with the quality of the product. The colour reproduction is so good that you can make out every subtle shade and hue of the woman's appaullingly applied eye shadow. The delicate fine grain of the mass-produced photo paper brings out every intricate detail of the subject's slight sneer and lank unwashed hair.
If I have a problem with any aspect of this product it's the misleading title. The photo is clearly a depiction of a woman expressing surprise at receiving a plate of runner beans and a barely-cooked Quorn burger with a disembodied hand mounted to the side of the plate. In light of this, this modern day version of the Mona Lisa (is she slightly sneering or is she throwing up in her mouth?) cannot be treated with the level of seriousness it deserves. If the artist cannot be bothered to label his work correctly then how can he expect us to comprehend the significant message he is trying to convey to us with this image? Because there is a spiritual message for all of us in this portrait, with its exquisite depiction of a woman rejecting a plate of vegetables and reformed mycoprotein. The message is simply this: If God did not intend for us to eat animals, then why are they made out of delicious food? |
