Unhappy Is there a dentist in the house

For over a week I have been having dental pain, related to a tooth that was third from the back in my upper left jaw. This was one that a while back had been a deep root filling with a crown and post.

Today I finally managed to get to the dentist, and it seemed that somehow an infection started and that tooth had to be extracted.

I have attached the X-Ray taken from before the extraction. The middle tooth on the image is the problem tooth and the shadow at the root is the infection.

I am now experiencing post op pain. I was not proscribed antibiotics so what happens to the infection now that tooth is gone.

How long will this post op pain be? I have been on Ibuprofen and Codine since Thursday evening. The box says I should only use this for three days, my sister who is a pharmacist says I should be ok to take them until Sunday.

Sympathies Sticks. Toothache and dental pains are hellish.

I'm unsure why, if there still is infection, why the dentist did not issue antib's to treat it - unless they feel that it will drain away now the tooth has been removed.

Only thing I can recommend is going to the dentist on Monday again (or a dental hosp tomorrow if you have one nearby)?

I think taking the tablets would be fine for an extra day or so to tide you over as long as you don't go over the prescribed amount per day/hours.

The infection was maybe just on the tooth that was removed? If it was still infected the dentist would surely have given you antibiotics.

I had an extraction six months ago and the post op pain only lasted just under 24 hours, I still had a faint ache for another two days before it stopped completely.

But I'm not sure with you having an infection if it may be any different.

I had an extraction earlier in the year but it wasn't infected, and the pain lasted only a day or so... the only real problem I had was getting the blood to clot in its absence. My sympathies, Sticks, toothache is probably the most unbearable ache you can get.

I had to get a front tooth composite on thurday because my niece snapped my tooth and I was really swollen and sore after it, theres still a little pain there now but the swelling has gone down.

I hope you feel better soon Sticks, but if you are worried about it still being infected just go back and ask the dentist to check it out.

It'll be ok to take painkillers for longer... Dunno about the infection though, normally antibiotics are prescribed to clear the infection before the tooth is extracted.

Even though the tooth has gone, surely the infection is still in your system therefore antibiotics should have been prescribed?

I was actually wondering if you had asked them for that xray.

Haha... I came back to this thread just to ask how you had your xray photo!

They were probably doing this as you were leaving.

Just a wee thought here: are such xrays the property of the dentist or of the patient -given that the patient has to pay for the cost of said xray etc.

Mmmm.... wonders.

Sticks...so sorry.... I never even asked how the pain is now? Has it eased any? Have the painkillers taken the edge of it for you?

Sticks, I aint no dentist but I'm wondering if the fact that the dark shaded part (that you say is the infected area, the abscess) - if you look you can see it also covers the top part of the tooth (ie the root) which has now been removed - so I'm wondering if the fact the tooth has been removed, that the dentist will have assessed that it will drain naturally through the 'hole' that has been left by the tooth having been removed?

I am supposed to use mouthwash after eating from Sunday

I assume the lack of antibiotics was for a reason.

The old fashioned warm salt water rinse still is one that my dentist recommends for extractions - Sticks, might be worthwhile having a wee read here...

I'm pretty sure you're wise enough to have done all this anyway, but it might allay some of your fears?

Xrays belong to the practice that took them. The fee you pay is for them taking the xray and making a diagnosis from them. You are entitled to a copy of your xrays, but the practice may charge you - no surprise there, then.

Sticks, hope you soon feel better. Antibiotics can be evil... if you're otherwise healthy your own immune system will probably sort out the infection now the affected tooth is gone and it'll probably be a lot less painful tomorrow. Hope so, anyway.

Sticks. I don't know how long it will last, every persons body is different and pain is different to each person. You'll feel either more pain or less pain than I would, you'll suffer for more or less days than I would.

Keep taking medication, take advice from your sister, she'll know best and in fact she'll be best to tell advise you and not us on TiBB

Perhaps Sticks wanted to share his experience, as well as gleaning any advice that may be offered.

Nice that you're effectively telling a member not to come on to Tibb for advice..... not exactly the way to boost membership really is it.
