Default Next popular genre of music?

Music goes in and out of fashion. In recent years we've had indie music, dubstep music, dance music, R&B music and all sorts of genres becoming popular for short periods of time before something else has taken over. This whole David Guetta dance sound has been the current flavour for quite some time now and, inevitably, people will eventually get sick of it and move onto a new sound. But what will it be, d'you reckon?

Personally I think we'll see the rise of the singer-songwriter again. Adele's success with 21 along with Ed Sheeran's breakthrough will, IMO, inspire a popular wave of stripped back, singer-songwriter with an instrument or two to accompany them type of music. What do you guys think? Who do you think is going to make a popular breakthrough this year?

The whole kind of style Bruno Mars/Olly Murs/Marcus Collins have, the upbeat, swing kind of sound...if that's the right way of describing it.

Jack is probably right - but I can see it just sticking with the whole RnB, Guetta, One Erection sh*te for a long time yet.

It's a shame too.

I thought with Gotye getting Number 1 for this long people would realize, 'Hey - why are we wasting our life listening to Pitbull instead of this kind of music?'

Ideally - I'd like Rock to become popular again on the charts but that's like asking for a Pornstar to visit me in the morning, it's not going to happen.

We've had that since 2009 - it's dull now.

It's not even real Hip Hop either. People seem to think Lil Wayne is the new Dre or something.

There was some decent RnB in 2008 - but it was all down hill from there.

There are only about 10 famous artists in America that are still making proper RnB, an none of them are that popular here. Usher seems to be going back to it though thankfully

I think other electronic genres will become popular really. In recent years we've only scratched the surface of the electronic music scene.

I think some kind of fusion of the singer songwriter/acoustic music and electronica will happen. Thats the only thing I can think of that hasn't been massively popular before.

Ke$ha is reportedly claiming to have created Cock pop?? which contains influences such as Led Zeppelin and AC/DC with an electro beat, which basically sounds pretty similar to Eurawk. A current take on 80's post punk no wave acts such as Gina X. Closest thing I could think to it currently would be Will.I.Am's T.H.E. Not a very good example, but a modern day equivalent of Hip Hop/Rock fusions such as Walk This Way by Run DMC/Aerosmith, but fused more with R&B and dubstep and irregular beats.

We need to get away from the David Guetta beat ****e

but in noooo way should music take a Gotye route, it would be too boring. We need some sort of variety

The UK charts don't even have variety at the moment.

Although I'm pleased at the majority of 2012's #1. Much better than 2010/11

Like, I'm sure the artists will stay the same for the most part, but the sound will change. I think Little Mix might end up being at the forefront of the new pop sound, whatever it may be. Perhaps a fusion of electronic music and classic singer-songwriter productions. Guitars with electro beats? Who knows. It's always so fluid though, it's not like the radio just changes overnight what it plays, but it does change very quickly. Bands beginning with "The ____" were everywhere a few years ago and then they were all gone like that.

I would say we have decent variety, its just the big beat songs seem to be overtaking the top 10
