TRACEY SAYS: Men are constantly criticized for watching porn on a regular basis but it may well be the key to maintaining a healthy libido long-term.
Turns out the secret to maintaining your 'mojo' - for both sexes - could be a lively interest in erotic literature and sexy films.
Research suggests women who have a 'library' of arousing images in their head - usually created by reading erotic stories or watching sexy films - are significantly better at arousing themselves spontaneously. Simply by thinking about a particular passage in the book or scene in the movie, they get an instant libido boost.
Men are traditionally thought of as having higher sex drives than women because they watch more porn.
But it could be they have higher sex drives because they watch it.
It's a significant finding that could offer a surprisingly easy way to tackle low desire: a problem both sexes, but particularly women, struggle with long-term.
Studies vary widely on how much porn the average man watches but it's around 40 minutes, three times a week for single men and roughly half that for men in relationships.
What if women read a racy book or watched erotica for 20 minutes a day?
What effect would this have on the average female libido?

I'm currently writing a book about female sex fantasies which (obviously) involves me focusing on sexual material for long periods at a time.
The days when I’m working on the book, my libido is drastically higher than the days I'm not. I'm basically being paid to turn myself on!


There's a reason why Fifty Shades of Grey has become the best-selling book in Britain since records began, with sales of 5.3 million (and rising).
Yes it's a love story but it’s primarily a sex story. It makes women feel horny again and when you haven't lusted after your partner for a very, very long time, this is a welcome response.
It's hard to keep lust going long-term but desire is a decision and you don't need a partner to turn yourself on, we’re all perfectly capable of doing it ourselves.
Could it really be as simple as reading a racy book or watching erotica for 20 minutes a day?

I have never read Fifty Shades of Gray, although I did read an excerpt from it before I decided it wasn't for me. I am happy to say I don't have to rely on sharing the fantasies of a middle aged, middle-class writer in order to feel horny. Moreover, this book isn't porn, it's mild titillation for the sexually inhibited.

I don't know Tracy Cox (great name for a "sexpert" though...) because I don't need a psychologist telling me how to get off. I'm sure the vast majority of women don't either.

I'm pretty sure the main issue people have with the pornographic industry is the incredibly unreported and high level of violence, trafficking and rape that's involved with it, not that only lads watch it.
