Default Laptop keeps saying 'Low disk space'

Despite me having nearly nothing that big on my main drive it keep saying it. And yesterday I had almost a gig free and I've noticed it has filled back up again to only 243 MB. So it's basically filling up on its own somehow. Could it be a virus or something?

Could be a virus, have you run a thorough virus check?

I don't much about that sort of thing, usually when something goes wrong with mine I just run an anti Malware thing and hope for the best

Install CCCleaner and run it, and defrag your disk.

1 gigabyte of disc space is a very small amount - what is the size of the whole disc?

51 gig but don't ever know where all that space has gone.

A gig free is no good what size is it in total? Do you have a split partition?

Are you cleaning up temporary files, browsing history etc?

It could possibly be some sort of virus filling the drive up as it replicates itself, even though the antivirus said there was nothing there I would make sure it's updated then boot the laptop up into safe mode and run the antivirus, malwarebytes and ccleaner. (I don't think it's a virus though)

Do a disk fragment and a disk cleanup, make sure the recycle bin is emptied.

Having any less that 10gb free could cause problems, with virtual memory and performance.

That 51gig you have in total may be partitioned so the amount would be just under half? do you have music and movies on the latop?

Got music but no movies or even videos. I don't get where all the space has gone really. Only got a few other programmes like skype, mIRC, pokerstars and a few browsers.

Have the browsers histories and temp files been getting cleaned? system restore and windows updates can use up quite a bit too, I think restore is normally around 10% of your total size so thats roughly 5gb right away.

Ah vista is bad for using up space, i'm betting a lot of that is system restore.

And no I wouldnt advise you to turn updates off, I would update actually.

You can change the maximum disk usage for system restore by using cmd prompt if you are confident enough to do it.
