how many are realistic and do you actually want them to be?

Id have to say very few imho are realistic

over the decades, Id say perhaps the most realistic war film was the hill , saving private ryan, and maybe zulu....whereas in other genres, maybe midnight cowboy, on the waterfront, taxi driver, serpico , billy eilliott, twin town, deer hunter and mean streets

but the majority are flights of fancy, OTT special effects, hammed up acting etc etc

I thought Leaving Las Vegas was quite realistic with whole alcohol thing and how it was affecting him. It was shot like an indie movie as well so there was no glam to it. Nicolas Cage is very hit and miss as an actor but when he's on form he's brilliant.

My Cousin Vinny is apparently a really accurate depiction of courtroom procedure, the director has a law degree himself from Cambridge I think

If I want realism I'll watch a documentary.

I don't know, some of this is confusing realism with grittiness... and in that respect I'd cite Tyrannosaur and Angela's Ashes as two good examples.

But even things where the plot is troubling and unusual, the way it's dealt with is very realistic (such as We Need to Talk About Kevin, or Moon).

Most movies these days are realistic . Obviously sci fi ones are far fetched but most dramas and comedy are realistic
