Default Charity

This'll probably sound quite sanctimonious but oh well I was talked into giving regular donations to UNICEF and Macmillan Cancer Support through direct debit - not much, just £2 a week for each - and was kinda interested to know whether many of you did, and what charities you favour, and so on?

No I dont give to any through direct debits, I just always put money into the charity boxes in shops or the ones people have standing around the street and I always buy the badges and other jewellery that avon sells to support cancer charities.

I give to charity on impulse now and then.
It annoys me a little that we dont see any "progress" though, just reasons why we should keep on donating.

IME, once you've contributed to charity via DD and then cancel, you still get bombarded with their, update, raffles, xmas cards, etc - how much does all that cost ?

So I give direct now.

I prefer to give to smaller charities that dont get any government funding or lottery handouts...I give to a local animal rescue place and our local hospice as the running costs are ridiculous and they are completely self funded...

soon adds up though 16.00 a month if you are a student with no job is alot..

We choose a charity to give to each year by DD, in the past we have given to NSPCC, RSPCA, Sightsavers, at the moment it is the WWF. I was a bit annoyed though as soon as I joined them they then rang me to up my donation, I gave the guy on the phone an earful...
.

I read something in the paper after red nose day that all this buying malaria nets etc actually put people who made the malaria nets in the country they were destined for out of a job, so I really dont know if any of it is doing any good.. or are we just lining someones pocket.

I donate to NSPCC and Macmillan too, charity collectors are becoming much more aggresive in their approach.
They regularly bound up to you in the city centre waving their ID in your face! ggggrrrr!
Save the children recently knocked on my door, I was ill and in pain, the dog was going nuts.. but could I get rid of him?...

I give to Animal charities now and then but that's it. I'd never give any to the big charities as it's all far too corrupt at the top. So when I do it's local ones.
