Mick Philpott has been described in court as "the driving force" behind a fire that killed six of his children, as he was sentenced to life in prison.

He was told by the trial judge at Nottingham Crown Court that he must serve a minimum of 15 years behind bars for the deaths.

Mrs Justice Kate Thirlwall also said he was a "disturbingly dangerous man" with "no moral compass", adding: "Your guiding principle is what Mick Philpott wants, Mick Philpott gets."

The 56-year-old defendant looked down at the floor, wiping tears from his eyes, as the judge handed down the term.

His wife Mairead, 32, and their friend Paul Mosley, 46, were each sentenced to 17 years in prison and were told they would serve half of that.

Mairead Philpott wept as she was jailed, while Mosley showed no reaction.

After sentencing, family members in the public gallery applauded. One shouted: "Die, Mick, die", while another said: "See you, Mairead. Hope you enjoy life on your own". A third person called out: "Your own babies".

In response, Mick Philpott smiled and made an obscene hand gesture as he was led from the dock.

On Morning TV he is said to have said when he and her get out they will go straight to their childrens graveside to spend they day,then rape each other and have sex WTF,he should have got life which means he should have rotted in jail.I don't know how much of this is true,but he is sick enough imo.

That happens sometimes. They do all their time in prison and think they#re getting out but instead carted off to Broadmoor for another 10 years or so.

He definitely has psychological issues. He's a classic narcisistic psychotic but psychiatric help would be wasted on him. Men like him have deep seeded issues that will never be cured. They've gotten away with so much in their lives they feel they are invincible and even when caught feel they're gonna somehow get out of it and those that oput them there will pay. Mick Phillpott is where he deserves to be psychiatric help wont help him.

This sentence is really pathetic in my view for all invovled. A financial crime could likely have got worse.

A great injustice,not for just the loss of one young life but 6 young lives,none of whom given a chance to even defend themselves.
Sickening,another tragedy after another,first the act of burning the house and the loss of lives of children and now this ridiculous sentence. Apalling.

Derby fire deaths: Philpott home to be demolished

The house in which six children died in a blaze started by their parents is to be demolished.

Derby City Council plans to demolish the home in Victory Road after Mick and Mairead Philpott, and their friend Paul Mosley, were jailed for the children's death.

Ward councillor Baggy Shanker said it could either become a memorial to the youngsters or be used for new housing.

Neighbours in the area will be asked what they would like in its place.

'Don't want memories'

Mick and Mairead Philpott were jailed on Thursday along with their friend Paul Mosley for starting the fire in a plot to frame a former mistress and get custody of her children.

Mick Philpott, 56, was given a life sentence for manslaughter and told he would serve a minimum of 15 years in prison.

Duwayne Philpott, 13, Jade Philpott, 10, and brothers John, nine, Jack, seven, Jesse, six, and Jayden, five.

Mairead Philpott, 32 and Mosley, 46, were told they would each serve half of a 17-year sentence.

Mr Shanker said the council is now going through the process of buying the neighbouring semi-detached house.

The intention is then to knock both down but it is not yet known what will replace the home.

"There are some in the community who would like us to create a memorial garden for the children," Mr Shanker said.

"But there are many who don't want the memory of what happened so close to home, what they would like to see is more residential."

'Pulled together'

The council has already created a memorial in a play area in nearby Tennyson Street where a piece of equipment has been named for each of the six children.

The community is now hoping it can move on, and is growing weary of being in the media spotlight, Mr Shanker said.

"There's a sense of satisfaction at the verdicts but they want to draw a line under the whole thing," he said.

"This is a close knit community which, right from the beginning, has pulled together for support."

Nah, 15 years is the minimum he will serve.

The others could be out in like 8/9 years though I think
