How do you feel about foreign workers?
There are a few members that talk badly about them, and this is wrong in my opinion!, why knock someone for wanting to work!, why knock someone for having the strength to leave their family and friends to make a better life for them self's. there is no difference in one of us wanting to work in or live in another country so why abuse them. ..I can't see that there is any difference, so long as employing a 'foreign worker' is based on merits because they're the best person for the job..and not just because they may be thought to be hard workers or cheap to employ etc because that's exploitation and discriminaton imo...

They're beneficial in some ways because some of them want to do the work that we don't. I wish their work ethic could rub off on our youth (I sound so old

As long as its legal, and they pay their taxes, its fine. Obviously, Brits should get the first look, if the qualifications are the same, and thats only fair. I am a foreigner, in the UK, so I quite understand it.

The majority of foreign workers I know are the most hardworking people I've ever met.
Its foreigners sponging our benefits that doesn't sit right with me but then the same can be said for the UK nationals. I agree with Marc, it's a shame the youths don't have the same work ethnic.

I used to work with a polish guy, and I can honestly say I have never seen anyone as hardworking as he was. Mind my employers took the piss a lot, he was only getting £2 per hour while we were on £5ish.

I don't see a problem with them. If they want to work and the jobs are there then its all good.

This is what I don't understand... how do employers get away with this? if they're not being paid a fair wage then they won't be unable to contribute to society and pay their taxes and NI will they?

If someone came in to check the books and stuff, they wouldnt get away with it. But noone ever seems to check. They should check regularly in places like pizza shops, chippies (where I was working), fast food places and such IMO..as thats where the underpaid workers usually are.

..I've only known one Polish lady, who was indeed a very hard worker, so I do agree with Vicky and Glenn about that..but I also don't think that UK people have experienced the same level of poverty/hardships they have..and they can't really help that..they will only acquire that 'work ethic' if employers take the time and effort to teach them it but it is also taught in the home as well from a very early age..that they have to work for things..
..I also feel that if employers value 'foreign people' as good workers then they should pay them that value and not exploit them as the maximum amount of work for the least cost possible..and also not recruit them because they feel they'll get 'value for money' but give everyone an equal chance of proving themselves... |

They are so diligent in cases where they are working too for our minimum wage as it is almost three times theirs, I think there was an article on is a while ago. It will seem like a fortune to them to earn what we call a pittance, it is humbling.

Can we deport some of the lazy unemployed kids in our country and replace them with hard working Polish people? Would this be ethical?

Allowing people to arrive in this country and work it's allowing our benefits drawers to live on the state while jobs are being done by incomers. All the time we have indiginous unemployed I don't see the sense of importing workers. I suppose there is a reason why British people are not flocking to Poland (or similar) to work, so it's not even like it's a reciprocal arrangement.

'Indigenous unemployed'? You make it sound like they were born to be unemployment. Is that an official expression? I've never heard it before

I don't really mind them, there are tons here. But they're not all hardworking. At one point in my city we were just getting all the Polish chavs over who basically just drank and trashed the streets. Also there's quite a few of the homeless population who are Eastern European. I've never seen them really intergrate much into our society either in the last 10 years or so, we have Polish areas where they basically just work in their own shops and supermarkets. I think the a lot of the 'good ones' went home when our economy collapsed.
