Default Woolwich murder- Police suspecting terrorist attack

Police say they are responding to an incident in Woolwich, south east London, amid reports that a man has been attacked.

Scotland Yard said the incident took place in John Wilson Street, at 14:20 BST.

Pictures on Twitter appear to show three people lying on the ground surrounded by police and paramedics.

London Ambulance Service said an air ambulance and four crews were also at the scene.

A spokesperson could not confirm the number of casualties.

Police said the area around John Wilson Street was shut down.

On its Twitter account, the Metropolitan Police helicopter team called the incident "serious".

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "Officers have responded to an incident...

"We believe at this stage officers were called to reports of an assault."

David Dixon, a local head teacher, told the BBC News Channel he walked out of the school gates and saw a body lying in the road a short distance away.

He then heard gunshots.

Two people have reportedly been shot in Woolwich, south east London, after armed police were called to a machete attack, eyewitnesses say.

Dozens of weapons and pools of blood could be seen on the ground in John Wilson Street, where a man wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt is said to have been attacked.

Police were sent to the scene at around 2.20pm.

The immediate area has been shut down, with eyewitnesses describing the incident on Twitter as "horrific".

On its Twitter account, the Metropolitan Police helicopter team called the incident "serious".

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We believe at this stage officers were called to reports of an assault."

London Air Ambulance confirmed one patient was airlifted from the scene, while another was taken away by road ambulance.

The service would not confirm the nature of their injuries or where they were being taken.

Two IC3 male run over IC1 then cut his head off with a machete! In broad day light.

"after stabbing the guy they was just standing there with the axe with blood dripping when the police came and started shooting"

Local MP #woolwich Nick Raynsford says one of the dead is a soldier from the local barracks.

Wearing help for heroes t-shirt when killed.

"People were asking whyy whyy? They were just saying we've had enough."

"brutal attack on a soldier in broadday light and they stayed by the body until police arrived. Why?"

Sounds like he was targeted for some reason?

They must have intended to end up dead themselves as well carrying out this attack the way they did and trying to take on the armed police
