Cruella

Overall, it's a fun film that's deeply flawed in part but the Emmas' performances are pretty great and really carry the film.

Starting off with the bad, the first fifteen minutes of this film is painful, Cruella's childhood is contrived, boring and features some of the worst performances I've seen this side of those dancing idiots in Hollyoaks. There's also the rather big issue that Cruella De Vil is not really all that evil in the film. is she a bit of a bitch? Kind of, but she's not really the villain the film desperately tells you to think she is. I'd say it's a step up from Maleficent, but if Disney wants to keep making villain films, they really need to let their villains be, you know, villains. At times it felt like they were pushing Cruella to almost be a Joker-esque figure which would have worked really well, but they were just too scared to make her too much of a villain. She's basically Harley Quinn-lite at times which isn't what you really want from Cruella. Still, the character is pretty likable regardless. The film also feels a bit too long (if they chopped down that dreadful childhood section, it would have been the perfect length) and the pacing is a bit schizophrenic.

As for the good, as I said before, Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are having a lot of fun and it shows and the visuals are pretty great, as is the soundtrack. There's also a number of sequences and scenes that are quite spectacular. I'd honestly like to see them do a sequel if Disney could allow themselves to let Cruella be actually evil.

It's a lopsided film that's a bit of a diamond in the rough, but it's a fun time regardless.

7/10

Fast zombies would be one of my worst fears if I ever found myself in a horror film. I did like how, if you consider Army a potential prequel to Dawn of the Dead, that it potentially explains why the zombies are fast.

Moonstruck

I saw this for the first time last night after noticing it was on BBC Player. Had heard a lot about it obviously (Cher's Oscar etc) but had never actually seen it myself.

What a lovely, heart warming and funny movie. Brilliant cast especially Cher, Nic Cage and Olympia (RIP). Really loved the whole setting and emphasis on the Italian American family too. Really enjoyed it.

There's just something about these classic rom-coms set in the big city that I love - especially if it's NYC. "When Harry Met Sally" has that same vibe about it, something fundamentally "romantic". Pure comfort viewing.

7.5/10.

Those who wish me dead.
This was really fun, I love Angelina Jolie in action mode.
Interesting story and well acted as well.

…The Strange House……it felt a little bit Goosebumps or a little bit Goonies…more of a family horror than a scary horror…it didn’t quite reach the jump/scare section …it was an ok movie, though…maybe a slight hint of Stranger Things as well…just quite a cute movie/characters but not that strange…6/10

"Summer of 84"

I'd describe it as a cross between Stranger Things and "The Burbs" with Tom Hanks .

The basic premise is that a group of 15-year-old boys from small town America become convinced that a man who lives on their street (who is also a cop) is a serial killer who is behind the disappearance of teenagers in their area, so they strat following/investigating/spying on him/going through his bins etc.

For those who haven't seen "The Burbs", it's a Tom Hanks film about a group of blokes who are convinced the new family on their street are murderers. The premise reminded me a LOT of that (with skeptical parents rather than skeptical wives), though this is less tongue-in-cheek. But it does have "coming of age comedy" elements (thus, Stranger Things) and is MOSTLY quite light-hearted, though does take a darker turn.

Enjoyable little film, easy 7/10.

I unfortunately will never be able to take OMAM seriously because (like everyone else) we did it in early high-school, and my English teacher at the time (a small, hippyish lady) did voices for George and Lennie and they were so, SO funny ... and will be in my head forever.

We watched it on Shudder (Amazon Prime). Have actually seen a few enjoyable smaller movies on there.

I have Amazon Prime but it doesn't seem to be on that, is Shudder a separate thing?

Yeah it's one of the separate subscriptions available through Prime, it's only £4 a month though and you can take-and-cancel whenever. We tend to sub for a month and watch a few movies on it a couple of times a year.

I went to see A Quiet Place: Part II on Thursday.

Overall, a great film and moves the story along nicely. The action sequences were flawless and my only complaint would be that it was too short. Another 10 minutes or so would have been ideal.

Spoiler:

I was surprised to see Djimon Honsou’s character die so quickly! I assumed he would have had a much bigger role.

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

The lack of James Wan is really felt, and sadly this falls more in line with the wishy washy spinoffs than the excellent first two films. It's not completely bad though, Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are great and there's a lot of heart this one, just like the first two but I think the story falls a bit flat.

I like that they tried to do something different, and that it's not just the Warrens investigating a haunted house, but I don't think the story worked very well. The villain felt half baked and underdeveloped and they weren't really a patch on the Witch and the Nun (let's forget her spinoff) from the first two films.

Spoiler:

It was all just kind of bleh, really. The idea that the satanist did what they did for the sake of it felt really weak as well. There's no real motive or reason for anything that happens and it isn't written well enough to play the Satanist off as some random opportunist. Like, in The Strangers, it's actually creepy how the killers just chose a random house to terrorise, but here it just felt like bad writing. She became a satanist because her dad fought against a cult and that was it. Terrible.

It's a decent enough watch, but there's a noticeable drop in quality from the first two films and I can only hope that James Wan returns to the franchise before the inevitable next film continues it's descent into bland mediocrity.

6/10

Arne’s girlfriend that was behind it

It was decent enough, better than all the spin offs, but not as good as the first two
