This phrase has been bandied about in the house by relative youngsters (Dan and Daley). I wish people wouldn't use it. Respect should be earned not given as a rite of passage into elderdom. Some older people are truly obnoxious.

People aged 28 and 33 are certainly not elders except maybe to very young children.

I think in Dans case it might also be because he was in a job that commanded some respect so he expects that to be carried on now

Respect has to be earned - unless you are in the workplace where lack of respect for the boss may cost you your job!

Surly EVERYONE should be respected?
It annoys me how in today's society you should only 'respect' certain groups or ages. You should bloody respect everyone around you! |

There are different types of respect.
For some people, respect means: "do as I say, and agree with what I say." |

50 years ago if you disrespected a policeman ex or not you would have had a clip round the ear. Even if he was pararding around on TV half naked all day

No reason to have to respect a policeman or former policeman. I respect people for them.

I respect the person who has a valid point. Not because of their age or prior work status. Not all people of a certain age have more wisdom because they have lived longer, some people young people have had to face more life experiences squashed into a small amount of time. What makes someone wiser and so who's way of doing things more respected, is someone who has "learnt" by life experience.
Right...anyone got a ladder for me to climb down off my high horse? |

When it comes to respect, I find you tend to get back what you give out.

if someone treat anyone younger or in a lower down job like dirt, then they don't really deserve any respect, considering they gave you none.

no way should any cop be respected . no way
respect has to be earnt yeah to a certain degree. but lt depends on the person. someone like jacky is generally up for a laugh likes to smile and is 60 she is more active and fun than the bore sophie for example who acts more like 70, so for her age and to do bb i think she deserves some respect. whether people like her or not . as for daley well respect your elders thats just weird on a whole new level. he is 4 yrs older than hazel apperently total head case saying something like that.

For Dan and Jackie this comment has meant ," Dont disagree with me"Totally misplaced. Respect is a two way street.

I don't think it's fair to lump Daley and Dan together- they use it in different contexts. Daley uses it to be an abusive asshole. Dan uses it in reference to an arrogant, know-it-all 18 year old who likes to talk out his backside about things he knows squat about to people who have experience and do know what they're talking about.
Jack lecturing Dan on how to cook properly or Joe having a tantrum about (choose a Joe's tantrum of the day to fill in that blank) is disrespectful to the people who are actually cooking for them and cleaning up after them. |
