As we all know, Wednesday will see the 12th anniversary to the tragic events of September 11th. Early on September 11th, two passenger jets were flown into the tallest buildings in the world. Later on, they both collapsed killing those inside the towers. It's been twelve years now and since, everyone has discovered so many things regarding the 9/11 attacks, and of course there was the downfall of Osama Bin Laden. Please use this thread as a sort of memorial to post pictures (suitable pictures), stories, just general, acceptable things. Also if you are unfamiliar with the attacks, you can read more about them here |

St. Paul’s Chapel is the oldest church in Manhattan and was where George Washington prayed on his Inauguration Day as president. It survived the Great NYC Fire of 1776, it survived the explosion at the World Trade Centre which is just across the road and it survived 9/11 despite being just yards away from the Twin Towers. The Chapel's organ was damaged by smoke but it sustained no other damage.
Volunteers kept the Chapel open as a sanctuary for fire fighters and other workers for food and counselling. The church is now a tourist attraction and they’ve kept many of the banners and messages of support that were sent after 9/11, including police and fire fighter badges that were sent from all over the world in solidarity with the men and women who worked through the bombing and afterwards. St Paul's Chapel bottom left. Inside the Chapel. Police and fire fighter badges from all over the world. |

''A girder that was part of one of the Twin Towers that collapsed on 9/11 has been found rusting in a farmyard in Cambridgeshire.
The 30ft piece of steel was donated to the UK in 2011 for a memorial sculpture erected in London's Battersea Park To commemorate the 67 Britons that died in the New York attacks.'' ''Peter Rosengard, the founder of the 9/11 London Project, which raised more than £250,000 to have the girder shipped to Britain, has described the situation an "an insult to those who died". http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013...?utm_hp_ref=uk The latest is I think to install the memorial in the Olympic village.

Yes it was on the news tonight Kizzy. About it's installation in the Olympic Park. I always remember a lot about that day. The things I did, my feelings etc. I suppose most of us do.

I still remember coming home from primary school to see my mum doing the ironing in front of the TV in floods of tears and not really understanding why the cartoons weren't on; but the image of my mum crying and seeing the 2nd plane hit the tower will be burned into my memory for the rest of my life, I don't remember much else about that day but I remember that as if it was yesterday. I cannot believe it's been 12 years as of tomorrow. Bless all of the brave people who tackled that inferno and my thoughts are with all of those who lost loved ones on that day. x

I had been living in New York for a couple of months when the Twin Towers went down. I lived about half mile from them… but thankfully I was at home in London on 11th September. I remember sitting watching with my hand over my mouth, barely able to comprehend what was happening. I couldn’t reach any of my friends and was worried that something had happened to them… thank God they were all safe.

I lived in NY for a year when I was a nanny,I frequently went into the towers,we often sat at the fountain just outside and spent many happy hours there having lunch, the day it happened was one of the saddest things I have ever seen, all those people going about their business with not a care, also the poor unfortunates in the planes,I thought the first one was an accident but when the second one went in it was obvious it was not,I saw some of my friends on the news footage, looking at the tragedy unfolding with disbelief in their eyes,I cried and still do,they now have a beautiful memorial and the place has a 'different' feel.

I remember being in work and one of our temps rang and asked if we'd heard the news - we hadn't. She told us that an aircraft had hit the twin towers and we assumed it was a light aircraft or one of those helicopters that do the tours...we logged on to the internet and watched as it unfolded. It was so strange - the phones stopped ringing, the roads went quiet, we all stopped talking - all we could hear was the radio station that we had been listening to reporting on it...it became very eery. I remember driving home and sitting up all night watching the Sky News reports...and thinking that this would change the world massively. My brother was flying at the time and shortly afterwards and he said he had never heard flights so silent...

A lot of life changing things have happened to me on September the 11th in the years since 9/11 happened. I always remember things of note that happen to me on that date every year because of 9/11 - over the last few years I've moved into halls; moved to Germany; and today I got a ticket to go and see my favourite band live for the first time ever... I think 9/11 will be a date that everyone who was old enough to remember it, will remember for the rest of their lives... there will always be that period of reflection on this date every year, I think.
I've seen people (younger than I am) say stuff like "why do people care about 9/11 so much, bad stuff happens all the time" and I just don't understand why people think like that. It's shocking because of the sheer destruction of it. Anyone watching the news when the 2nd plane hit would never say something like "why do people care" - it was truly devastating. |

Twelve years ago, this minute, there would have been mayhem around the area.
At 10:28am on September 11th, the second of the two towers collapsed. Never forget. |

Not sure. Remember being in Year 8 and panic setting in on teachers and Students. Rumours started about all these areas getting hit that weren't true...was a terrifying time.
