Page won't let me copy and paste the article but it's a very interesting explanation of why actors like Leonardo DiCaprio won't ever win Oscars, because the roles he plays aren't relatable. Edit nvm my mouse was playing up, here's the article: Quote:

To sum up: the Oscars reward relatable performances. DiCaprio's given many wonderful performances over the last couple of years but not one of those roles have been relatable. The audience marvels at how convincing he is, how cool he is, but they don't feel like they could put themselves in the character's position because the performance is to be viewed, not experienced. It's why the likes of Brad Pitt, James Dean etc have never won an Oscar - people think they are cool and are in awe of them but they never feel like they could be them. Compared to Matthew McConaughey who built up his career on being a cool guy doing mostly light fluff roles that weren't remotely relatable to anyone watching, to him portraying an AIDS sufferer, the dedication he put into that performance and how relatable his characterisation was is why it was rewarded.

its because he doesn't ass kiss which you have to do to with the oscars its part of the thing where they have to grease sweaty palms. its all very strange. and his roles are not the normal hollywood dribble.
like scorsese he goes against the norm. he will win. i cant begrudge mathew he deserved it,

The article was an interesting read. It reminded me of the quote from that Ben Stiller parody war film, about never going full ****** if you want to win an oscar.

I hate the fact that comedies, even black comedies are overlooked...why?
most great movied are laced with black comedy, even the likes of the shining, serpico, Godfather,Taxi driver has lots of dark humour but once it seems its got humour it seems to fall away this business of losing weight and playing a sick person has worked for tom hanks, christian bale, charlize theron, etc but the original was deniro , but that was different, where he became a world class boxer with phenomenal training regime and trained by a boxing legend for months....then he ate like a pig for 6 months and ballooned to 15 stones just to be authentic. now thats awesome. the clips ive seen off dallas cowboys look really powerful though I love all these actors but havent seen all the movies so wirhold judgement on the winner. I would say decaprio has loads of great performances and movies. his best imho is as good as it gets.....its not hes too cool....he needs to find that edge I think to be considered a legend. he almost tries too hard, hes not naturally menacing in the way brando , nicholson, charles bronson, joe pesci, bogart, cagney, deniro, sean penn, hopkins, walken, kaitel, are ....the women too like bette davis, streep, mia farrow, kathy bates, can all be edgy too......somewhere decaprio is misisng this edge. but hes still fantastic mcconaughey is having the time of his life, check him out in bernie with jack black too , terrific...he also made a lovely speech....well excited to see all these movies |
