You wake up in hospital to be told you have been in a car accident and you have a broken neck. There's nothing more the doctors can do, so you'll spend the rest of your life paralysed from the neck down. The doctors have inserted a breathing tube and will have to put in a permanent one. They ask you if you'd like the breathing tube removed (meaning that you will die).

What is your decision? Do you choose to end your life at that moment, or do you continue on knowing how your life will be limited from that point onwards?

It's impossible to say 100% how I'd feel tbh, can only answer hypothetically that I'm as sure as I can be that I'd want to live.

I think I would probably let myself live and hope for some kind of new technology which would improve my quality of life.

I would leave the tube in and spend all my days just grateful to be alive and try to live my life to the fullest

Or I would just stay inside all day every day watching daytime tv

It came up on a recent episode of Grey's Anatomy. That was my inspiration for the thread. But, I did ponder over it for a while after the episode.

I can't help thinking that I would be a massive burden on my family if they had to take care of me with that much paralysis. I wouldn't want that for them. So for the most part, my decision would be based on that fact.

Of course I don't want to die, and I want to see my children grow up etc., but at what cost? There comes a point in your life where it's no longer a life, but merely an existence. For me, this may be that point, in which case I would want to remove the tube.

I don't think I'd truly feel the value of life after such an accident (I know many disabled people can) but I don't think I'd have the mental aptitude to carry on.

I would probably tell them to keep the tube in and regret it after, once I realise how bored I'd be. Although, I'd get to watch soooo many box sets... but I do that anyway. I'd probably end up asking them to get rid of the tube.

Id have the tube removed and die, then my body would go to medical science.

..I think I would definitely want it removed because being like that and knowing how my family would be affected and how their lives would also change would be unbearable..but I would hope that I wasn't asked for that decision when I woke up though, because I don't think that would be the time to make it/it would take time for everything to 'sink in', not just for me but for my whole family and friends etc and I think it's something that you would all have to talk about and come to terms with so I wouldn't want to make the decision for say a month or so and just make sure I could talk to the people I love first...

I'd stay alive for a while, just because I think it'd be selfish and a bit of a cop-out to die straight away. Assuming I can speak (from the hypothesis) I could still communicate with people... I don't think I'd like to be a burden for long, though.

I don't think I could cope with not being able to move or even breathe of my own accord, I would be grossed out by my own existence and I would hate the thought of inconveniencing anyone with the condition I was in... I'd just want to go out quietly.

I would ask for time to say goodbyes and then as much as it would kill me anyway to say those goodbyes ask for the tube to be removed, I would be glad that it was my decision and my loved ones didn't have to make the decision to switch me off and then live with that decision.
