Default Squirrel Pie Business based in Leicestershire 150 a week sold at £2:50 each

How to earn a crust out of squirrels: Customers go nuts for pies made using animal's meat

Business based in Old Dalby, Leicestershire, is shifting 150 pies a week
Phil Walmsley, 46, hunts squirrels, then makes pies which sell for £2.50
Squirrels - which are legal to kill - have dark meat and taste 'gamey'
Recipe won Mr Walmsley and his wife Katherine, 53, a British Pie Award

He's found a niche in the market there, and with them only eating nuts/fruit/seeds I bet they taste nice?

What a ridiculous gimmick. Why stop at squirrels? Around where I live they shoot magpies, jays, all kinds of wildlife. What are we, hillbillies? What next, roadkill?

Pheasant, partridge, duck, rabbit and quail are acceptable? Squirrel are more prevalent too so there is no risk of reducing numbers too drastically.

Squirrels are vermin. They eat all kinds of crap... if people want to eat vermin that's very much their call. Not for me though. I don't eat any game because it tastes horrible IMO

Eastern gray squirrels eat a range of foods, such as tree bark, tree buds, berries, many types of seeds and acorns, walnuts, and other nuts, and some types of fungi found in the forests, including fly agaric mushrooms (Amanita muscaria).[23] They can cause damage by tearing the tree bark and eating the soft cambial tissue underneath. In Europe, sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) L. and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) suffer the greatest damage.[24]

'Eastern gray squirrels have a high enough tolerance for humans to inhabit residential neighborhoods and will raid bird feeders for millet, corn, and sunflower seeds. On very rare occasions, when their usual food sources are scarce, eastern gray squirrels will also prey upon insects, frogs, small rodents including other squirrels, and small birds, their eggs and young.[1][15] They will also gnaw on bones, antlers, and turtle shells – likely as a source of minerals sparse in their normal diet'

I have the feeling that if we knew what food our farm produced animals ate it wouldn't be as appetising.

Not for me, I don't like "gamey" tasting food.

Good idea though, grey squirrels are a pest, even though they do look cute.

Is there enough meat on 1 squirrel to make a pie?

I think if more people were less ignorant to the facts surrounding the food that was on their plate they would be a lot more accepting of this concept.

Most people are clued up about what they eat. If someone doesn't want to eat something, that's their own choice, and resorting to eating vermin in a pie isn't what I choose to do. But hey, if you fancy it, knock yourself out.
