Default New question: Do you think stripping is viewed as a respectable job?

I've been in a long debate with two of my female friends who both have considered becoming a stripper as they believe it to be good money as a part time job.

I completely oppose the idea and it's one of the few things I feel strongly against. I don't think they're respected whatsoever and are simply looked at as pieces of meat dancing around a pole and it's not a job to be desired, an opinion they're shocked I have.

They claim women are in fact taking advantage of men in the situation by racking in the money for little more than an almost-nude dance.

Would like to hear TiBB's perspective

It's like prostitution : the sort of job people get because they (a) can't get anything else and (b) have little self-respect.

Not really. It's a great job for a male or female who wants to make money while going to school (for example) . You make a hell of a lot more money than working at Burger King.

Your self-respect has to take second place to cash.

Not much different from prostitution in that way.

if you morally have no problem with doing it than I don't see the problem. Same with prostitution. Nudity and sex is nothing to be ashamed of so I don't see the problem with making money off your appearance. What's the difference between being a model advertizing a product and a stripper or even a prostitution? They are making money on being attractive. There is nothing wrong with that.

Do I think a job where a woman is liberated enough to freely express her sexuality and use it to obtain power over and money from men is a respectable job? Without a shadow of a doubt.

Even if we're talking about strippers in general regardless of gender then I don't see the problem, if you don't want to be a stripper or use strippers then fair enough...but live and let live with regards to other people I don't see why respect needs to come into it, if both parties involved are getting what they want out of it then no one else needs to be concerned really

I'm not passing judgment. Prostitution is said to be the 'oldest profession'.

Stripping and so-called glamour modelling are a bit newer. That's all. All in the same broad category!

That's a very narrow view, I was at college with two beautiful girls who were pole dancers.. They were normal happy young women.

Don't really think strippers should have anything to be ashamed of, they're free to use their bodies as they wish for their own gain and they have complete control over the situation; all the rules and regulations that strip clubs have are to protect the dancers and the punters aren't able to take advantage or anything like that. I wouldn't think that many people would consider it a profession to aspire to but if they're comfortable with it then there are worse ways to earn less money

..yeah, it's no more or less 'respectable' than any other job and I would say that if someone doesn't respect that or anyone who strips then that would reflect more on them and their 'judgements'......

The sexualisation of a stripper is a lot greater than a model typically.

To me modelling is a couple of notches below stripping. Their can be artistic intentions there, it's not necessarily all about sex and it's a still image. I don't think nude modelling is particularly respectable either, though.

To clarify I'm not saying I look down on the people that do strip, I'm saying the vast majority do and thus I feel like you're looked at as lowering yourself to be seen as an object purely for sexual desire in the most extreme setting. I wouldn't feel comfortable with close friends being judged in such a way, my business or not.

Would you feel perfectly fine dating one knowing dozens of men every night get off on the bare body that she's fronting in their direction to make money? I personally couldn't.

I half expected this consensus, maybe I should have titled it different it's more the general view of those going to strip clubs that in this situation leaves me uncomfortable with the it rather than my own personal feelings towards the job itself.

Sadly I don't think TiBBers represent the demographic that are going to strip clubs.

They'll probably regret the mobile phone photos which go up on the web when they are in respectable jobs and/or happily married women. Lol!

Men who are happy to hand over hard earned money to women who dance around taking their clothes off?

I imagine for the girls it'd feel great though

I get what you are saying. People do look down on people who strip, but people judge people for many things and honestly I don't think most people care as much anymore.

I would date a stripper sure. I am irrationally judgmental but that doesn't bother me.

Those who go to strip clubs aren't really bad people either in most cases I'd say, you might get a few blokes who are a bit sleazy but so what, not really like they can do anything untoward seeing as most strip clubs have pretty strict rules in place

Respectable job?

what is that. Is working in Asda respectable or flipping burgers?

Is working for a casino or bookie respectable?

What about working for bank?

Do you think stripping is viewed as a respectable job would have been a more fitting question
