Just to give you some brief membership figures -
2012 - 13,809 2013 - 30,809 2014 - 42,005 As you can see the membership figure has grown by 12,000 in just over the first two weeks of 2014 - a faster growth than any other party. What do you think has caused this? Dissatisfaction with the main three? Discuss.

Less than 1% of the population belong to any political party. It's not an indicator really. I predict the Greens may grab a seat or two, so long as no one voting for them looks very closely at the fiasco they've made of running Brighton, but mostly they'll just split the Labour vote. Green policies are as pie in the sky as UKIP policies; they don't say much about how they'll afford them, nor about how much extra it'll cost us to drive a car or heat your house.

The Greens are not as relevant a political force as they think they are IMO, they are determined to see a political and media conspiracy against them when really the reason they get comparatively little coverage is because they don't actually do that good a job of engaging with the electorate and presenting themselves as a credible alternative. Yes they have an MP, but in the general election in which they took that seat they actually got less than 1% of the vote countrywide. They had 304 out of their 310 candidates lose their deposits. Like Livia mentions they did make a real hash of things in Brighton. They will no doubt see an improved performance in 2015, but not by that much. I'll be very surprised to see them gain more than two seats. Last edited by MTVN; 17-01-2015 at 04:42 PM. |

That would be a really great outcome after the May election Kizzy.
Sadly, members numbers don't decide the outcome of elections, with the Greens still only on 8% maximum in the polls, that will not reflect in seats won under this electoral system. Therein lies the problem, the problem too for UKIP, who even on 15% to 18% would still struggle to add to the 2 seats they now have and in fact could even lose one of them. I would however welcome a Labour/Green govt. I think that would be a compassionate, fair and really good govt. Had we adopted the AV voting system, that may have been more of a reality to come about, not under first past the post however. Any medium to major split in the anti Conservative vote by voters,is more likely to leave the Conservatives the largest party or just short of an overall majority. With the Lib Dems still likely to hold,(possibly just), double figures of seats, then we could end up with a continuation of what we have now and for me that would be totally a disastrous outcome. |

It's 2015 now. According to the House of Commons Library, membership of the Green Party in December 2014 officially stood at circa 29,000. |
