Update: he started interfering with one of my colleagues' workload, she quietly erupted at him and his response was to move back to his original seat next to me (mare); then on Monday he fought with another member of the team because he started doing work that she'd already been working on for over a month; then on Tuesday I discovered someone had put out two bookings in my name on one of my projects - a project I'd shelved because of an IT issue and was waiting to be resolved. That was it for me, I raised a complaint with the manager of another team and now she's moving three of us to desks with her team, thank God. She said I had every right to be annoyed and she was going to look into it for me. The guy ought to be fired, honestly, he's like a bull in a china shop.

So the colleague has gone from being annoying to interfering with other people's work, why did 3 of you have to move desks when he is in the wrong, like taking a slegehammer to crack a nut |

Honestly, no one even does anymore, I try to avoid making eye contact with him because he could argue his way out of a paper bag.

I would probably blast him for being a twat. I know you are concerned about the team and such, BUT if he is really that annoying, the restof the team will also be biting their tongues and you will probably be doing what they all want to do themselves.
Asides from that, completely blank him. When he complains to the manager about it, explain that you are blanking him because he is acunt...but in nicer words.

You all need to unite and confront him as a group. Try explaining that he might just regard his behaviour as a bit of fun, but to all of you it's far from it, and you all find it irritating and wearing, and it's beginning to impact upon your work. Ask him to tone it down for the sake of all of you, and if he refuses or gets stroppy, tell him to his face that all of you are going to 'send him to Coventry'. If he continues as before, then you need to confront the boss as a group, explain the situation and how you've tried to reason with this bully, and then give the boss an ultimatum; that the bully goes or all of you will start looking for another job.
You need everything put down in writing and given to your boss in case it ever comes to initiating action such as an Employment Tribunal. I wouldn't worry about 'creating' any bad atmosphere by confronting either the bully or the boss, because it sounds like you already are enduring a 'bad' atmosphere not of your choosing. The boss will out the bully rather than have to face the possibility of losing all of you. You'll see.

i would give him the wrong advice - this person has to take responsibility and if he does not no what to do he is in the wrong job.
