...people shouldn't be nominated because they are black, or Indian, or non-white, just the same as they shouldn't be NOT nominated for that reason.
I'm pretty sure they want to be nominated for their acting talent, not because they are in a minority group. There just weren't any good films with a non-white lead role this year, there is nothing more to it! Why does it always have to be segregated into Black, White, Indian etc, we're all people! Thoughts? |

Positive discrimination would make the awards meaningless. To be a truly diverse society we've got to stop segregating ourselves, like Conzors said.

when people don't recognize color and are just appreciated for who they are as a person then that's when discrimination will no longer be an issue. |

It's easy to say that as a white person though who hasn't really faced the same discrimination as black people. As LT said the lack of black actors up for awards was down to the lack of decent roles being given to black actors

There are lots of sections of society who are under-represented in Hollywood. There aren't many great roles for older women, for instance. I honestly feel like things are moving for black actors though, every year we get a little further forward and pretty soon I'm sure black actors in leading roles will be the norm. I don't feel that positively discriminating is the way to push that forward.

Oh no, neither do I. But I feel Conzors was questioning why a "thing" is made about the representation of black actors in films.
And the older woman comparison is true. I'm sure Meryl Streep should just have her own category. The only older woman to ever win anything that I can ever remember. Last edited by Marsh.; 09-03-2015 at 11:22 AM. |

I think TV is actually helping female roles hugely. TV has gotten so good in the last few years, so much so, film actors are starting to actually move into TV and alot of great shows have great female roles that cater for a much bigger and better range of "types" of women, American Horror Story and Orange is the New Black are 2 good examples of that

Yeah, TV has overtaken films loads in the last 10 or so years hugely.
That's where the quality is too. |

I'd choose a good TV series over a film any day - I like getting to know characters. I'm currently hooked on Orange Is The New Black and Grey's Anatomy.

I take exception with the fact that American Sniper was nominated at all, it's a truly terrible film and the fact that Bradley Cooper was given a nomination in the Best Actor section but not David Oyelowo was a travesty.

Not to mention all those other religious inspired films like Noah, all those characters are always played by white actors when in reality they should be middle eastern

The main thing the Oscars are biased against is certain genres of films. Like science fiction, fantasy, horror, animation, comedies, foreign-language films, action films, even childrens' films.
The films they like are biopics and historical films, especially about important moments in American history. And serious films about social issues. |
