Default The good deeds thread

I've been quite emotional and depressed these past few days and I feel like this would be a good thread to lift peoples spirits a bit.
It might be a major flop but worth a try

So yeah the purpose of this thread is to post our recent good deeds, no matter how small or insignificant.
Some examples: Donating some money to charity (even if it's £1 it's still worth mentioning!!), Volunteering, Giving a homeless person some food/money, Helping an old lady across the road or giving your seat up for somebody, helping an injured animal on the side of a road, helping an injured insect, helping a stranger out with directions, cheering somebody up who looks upset, etc.

I buy all my books from charity shops and then take them back when I've finished. Small things all add up

Good thread idea Bex

Omg that's such a good idea I know some people that don't like the idea of buying from charity shops, but you can find some really good buys in them

Thanks

I worked in a PDSA charity shop for a little while last year, lots of really nice things there. No reason at all for people to look down on them imo.

This isn't me, but one of my aunt's cats (she has two) originally belonged to her neighbours. When they moved away, they left the cat behind (why the **** would you even do that?). My aunt was already fond of him because he used to wander over to her house every now and again even when he had owners, after he was abandoned she continued to feed him and eventually took him in as her own because she hated to think of him living on the streets alone. He's still happily living there.

It's similar to how I ended up owning my cat, actually. She was apparently homeless and, after we fed her one day (we didn't know she was homeless at the time, she was just hanging around so we fed her) she literally never left again . We found out not long after that she had no owners anymore, whether they just threw her out or moved I'm not sure. Anyway, she became our pet after that, we only had her for a year before we unfortunately had to put her to sleep when she fell ill but I'm glad she had a home (and it felt like so much longer than a year tbh).

The woman who sells the Big Issue next to the supermarket near my work often asks me to get her a bottle of orange juice. I always do even though it's like £1.09

I gave in some tins of sweetcorn and some tinned tomatoes to a food bank today at school for the locaal Wigan food bank for those who are homeless. Oh and I also had some peanut butter what my mum gave me but when I checked it had gone off and you know I didn't want to kill homeless people and land my mum a prison sentence.

This is I consider my best deed though:

- Back in April a boy from the year below me at school drowned in a quarry and it was just really awful and even though I didn't know him that week and we'd only spoke once or twice it really upset me. His family couldn't afford the money to pay for his funeral as they're asylum seekers from Nigeria. I phoned up Asda and spoke to the general manager one day and organised that we do a bag pack at the end of the tills to raise money and I got seven people to come along and help. Me and the others ended up raising nearly £700 for his funeral fund and I always feel really proud of that.

That is amazing you certainly should be proud of that.

I run the race for life every year and next year I am doing the Manchester to Blackpool bike ride to raise funds for the hospice who cared for my mum in her last days...

A bag pack was such a good idea! You definitely should be proud, you did a selfless thing for a family in need <3 His family must have been so happy and grateful that you helped them raise money for his funeral

I've always wanted to do something like that but i've never been good at exercising for long periods of time, so I know I wouldn't be able to finish it. I have so much respect for the people who do it, it must take a lot of hard work and motivation.

Gosh my family has so much food that we don't eat that ends up going out of date so we just throw it away (my dad tends to buy things for the sake of it so we end up with tins of food that none of us eat haha) I've never thought about giving some to food banks before, that's a great idea + would clear the cupboards a bit so it's a win win!

Thank you it wasn't that bad either doing it and some people were REALLY generous we had a few who donated five pounds and even two women who donated ten pounds. A few didn't put any in and there were even one or two who were actually VERY rude. But other than that it was nice to see a community pull together <3

Thank you Dolface

It's not really recent but I used to volunteer at the PDSA charity shop for 2 and a half years, and i'm also a blood donor.

Also, Daniel that's an amazing thing to do, well done

I don't usually either but it's actually a pretty good idea like you day because you can clean our cupboards but instead of wasting things make them go to help. I think this is the first time i've donated to a food bank and that's only because our school organised one. I will try to from now on though.

My nan is the cutest every week when she does her weekly shopping at morrisons she buys some dog chews and puts them in a sort of food bank for cats and dogs which they have
