Default Are you a 'hero'?

I just went to boots and there was a guy running out as I got there and one of the staff was shouting "SHOPLIFTER!". Anyway he ran straight past me and I thought afterwards, I could have probably tripped him up or something but I didn't do anything to help. I know it's not exactly the same as seeing someone mug an old lady or anything but it made me wonder how I might act in a situation like that. Usually I'm the type to avoid confrontational/dangerous situations.

Have any of you ever been in that kind of situation? Were you the hero?

Don't be modest

I don't know if I could be called a hero, but one time I was standing behind two young lads in the bus station and they were laughing at a handicapped young man. I tapped them on the shoulder and said that life was hard enough being handicapped, without having idiots like them laughing at handicapped people. They were a bit shamefaced and shuffled off and I did think afterwards they could have turned nasty, but I was so angry at them that I didn't consider the consequences.

I stopped the car once and rescued a teen who was having spit spat down his throat by 2 hoodlums who ran away. I had a hammer that somehow i had stored under my car seat

essentially I was a hero to that boy, what would have happened if the 2 goons had not run away I do not know but I expect I would have been fishing the hammer out of my anus in A&E

I think that's very heroic And I'm sure the handicapped man would think so too

I will always remember a situation in London where a woman was arguing with her mother (?) on a hill-like, busy street. For a split-second she let go of the pram and it traveled down towards me so I stopped it from going any further.

I make it sound a lot more heroic than what it was because we were physically quite close, but if I never had grabbed onto the pram god knows what would've happened.

Yeah helping old people is probably the best, simple things like helping them choose batteries means the world to some of them without trying to sound patronising

Good ol retail

If it's not someone I know, or maybe a child, then generally I don't give enough of a **** to risk myself being a hero. Definitely not to stop a shoplifter?? Oh yes let's risk getting stabbed to save a multi million £££ corporation £10. Errrrrrr. Also OP if you'd tripped that guy and he'd been injured, you'd probably have ended up being charged for assault of some kind. ****ty system. We're specifically told that at work - if someone attacks YOU, you can defend yourself if necessary. If someone barges in just trying to grab cash, you CAN'T hit them or attempt to detain them. Security guards / bouncers etc. have special licences to be able to do so these days.

That's probably true actually. I studied law briefly at uni and they told us about a case where a burglar broke into a womans house, through the window, and landed on a knife that was on the work surface, and he actually claimed compensation from her! (bit off topic but it shows how crazy the laws can be with things like this). And yeah, I can't really say I have too much sympathy for Boots, I'm sure they'll be alright!
