Default Sea world to END Orca Breeding Programme

Quote:
theme park operator SeaWorld says it is ending its controversial orca breeding programme.

The decision means the orca whales currently at the parks will be "the last generation", the company said.

SeaWorld, which has 12 parks across the US, has faced heavy criticism over the alleged poor treatment of its captive orcas, also known as killer whales.

The company said the orcas would be likely to die if it released them into the wild.
"For as long as they live, the orcas at SeaWorld will stay in our parks," the company said in a Los Angeles Times op-ed.

SeaWorld has previously announced that it will phase out live orca shows.
Dramatic displays by the whales are the centrepiece of three parks operated by SeaWorld, in California, Florida and Texas.

Ughh the fact the place even still exists makes me feel sick.
They make these statements but in reality are doing the bare minimum required to make themselves look like are changing the way they operate.
The reality of that statement is that you might be able to see Orca whales perform at the hell hole for another 50 years.

What utter nonsense of a comment.
Why on earth should people shut up about it when these animals are still being kept in terrible conditions for the amusement of idiots and are likely to continue to be for up to the next 50 years.

Telling people to s t f u shows a level of arrogance, ignorance and imaturity that beggars belief especially from someone that often trots out their own issues on here and attacks anyone that doesnt agree with them.

Because most of the people who comment on this issue have never actually been to Seaworld itself to see what it's really like, granted I still agree this treatment is unacceptable and I'm glad they're going to put an end to it but the calls for it to be shut down completely are so ridiculously over the top. There are plenty of other things in the parks that are fine as well as good rides that shouldn't go to waste just because some people have watched a film and are crying and screaming about it

By all means campaign for the mistreatment to stop, rightfully so, but 'close Seaworld' nah **** off

When did I ever mention people on this thread or indeed this forum? I said 'people', there's more people in the world that are commenting on this issue than just people on TiBB

Most of the people who go on about this issue have a) likely never been to Seaworld to see what it's like for themselves and b) don't just campaign for the mistreatment to stop, but for the entire park to be closed down which is ludicrous, and my problem

I don't think that's true at all Jack and actually going and supporting a place that does this to Orcas would be ridiculous to anyone who's against Orcas being held and breed in captivity.

Well said Bobnot, it's tragic that these beautiful animals are restrained and taught to do tricks for stupid humans who actually pay to see it, the ones remaining will still suffer.

They have promised to put an end to the shows by 2019 but the Orcas will still be housed at the park and on display to the public. I feel i was snappy with you earlier in the thread and for that i apologise i was wound up by a really ignorant post in the thread that came before you posted.

Seaworld could still do so much more. They are still ignoring calls to build a large enclosure for them away from the park and in the sea where they might be able to live out their lives in slightly less vile conditions. The misery they have inflicted on these animals and the hundreds of millions of dollars they have made from doing it you would think it is the least they could do.

Seaworld could have a bright future in helping with the preservation of sea life if they do it ethically and still make money while doing it but unfortunately they only seem to see the profit margins.

I'm all for the enclosures in the ocean but the sad fact is they just wouldn't survive in them.

Yes they would survive.
Im not sure you still really grasp how cash hungry Seaworld are to keep the Orca program alive
Only 14 weeks ago they proposed to double the size of the tanks and asked for planning permission (great news you might think) it was suspected though that they were planning to use the increase in space to increase the number of Orcas they hold in captivity so they were granted permission to build the larger tanks on condition they didnt increase the number of Orca whales (they currently have 11) and stopped the transfer of whales to and from the park.
Seaworld stated they plan to sue the coastal commission for trying to impose those conditions.

They have 23 Orcas at present someof them are captive bred and some of them were kidnapped from the wild at a young age.

There isn't an orca program though. That's what they are stopping.

Good to hear that they're doing the right thing in regards to the orcas.

Even the word "tanks" in relation to where Orcas have to live, sounds horrific to me tbh
