I've been battling this disease for the past few days I first got ill over 3 weeks ago, went to the doctor, and got antibiotics. It started cleaning up but the sore throat came back just before my course was done and over the last few days it's developed into full blown tonsillitis: pussy tonsils, extremely sore throats, exhausted, swollen glands. And it's gotten worse every day over the last week ; it's like every day my body's saying 'lol you think yesterday was bad? Try this'
Went to the doctors this morning and got more antibiotics and they also took a blood test for glandular fever. I just feel like I've been ill forever and it's so depressing. Anyone got any tonsillitis stories? Did you have antibiotics? How long was recovery? |

not had tom - but keep a eye on it and if it don't improve - don't be frightened to go back as it may well be something else. ( that's not to scare you. ) |

I got it on and off loads as a kid, once lasted so long that the pain became normal and one day I thought my throat felt "strange" - then realised that it was because the pain was gone, and it felt really unusual . The doctor said if it kept happening they were to come out. Guess they listened because it stopped .
I got it again a couple of years ago though (aged 27) and was pretty miserable with it - I was ill for a good 2 weeks and it lingered on one side for (literally) months. Antibiotics didn't shift it. Cleared up eventually on its own. Haven't had it again since, touch wood. |

They're very slow to remove kids tonsils now for some reason (here anyway) you need to have had tonsillitis a certain amount of times before they'll do it, no idea why really, tonsils are useless enough, aren't they?

Yes I believe they are useless Niamh, which was probably why in the 1950's at the first sign of tonsillitis they whipped them out. I have no idea why they let people suffer bout after bout of it now.

I feel no worse but no better today having been on antibiotics for 24 hrs.
Hopefully this is them just taking effect. I finished lectures today and I feel like my body needs a proper rest/chance to fight this off now! |

They're not actually useless, they're part of the lymphatic system and linked to immunity / infection prevention (ironically) though they aren't AS important in the modern world, as with good sanitation we're exposed to a lot less anyway. But removal can make you more prone to chest and (non tonsil related) throat infections.
