Default Post Office workers to strike in week before Christmas

Quote:
Post Office workers are to stage five days of strikes in the week leading up to Christmas.

The industrial action next week comes amid a dispute with management over job losses, the closure of a final salary pension scheme and branches being shut.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) said the walkout will include Christmas Eve.

CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey said: "All of the blame for this unfortunate turn of events is 100% down to the intransigence of the company."

He claimed the Post Office had "launched an unprecedented attack on the jobs, job security, and pensions of
thousands of hard-working and loyal Post Office workers".

Mr Furey added: "The CWU can be a constructive partner to work with, but sadly, the people currently running the company have, so far, chosen the path of conflict and industrial disputes."

Disgraceful decision...and will win no sympathy from the public.

It will likely have little effect.

This I understand is affecting the main Crown Post offices, crazy to take this action at this time of year really.

While I can sympathise with their cause,I think this could turn out a pointless exercise.
Sadly for them and the main Post offices.

"It will likely have little effect."

Yes Joey
the AmazonUK white vans (sub, sub contract)
gets many amazon orders to most homes
and many drop off at Amazon lockers
and drop of points, small newspaper shops
which keeps them cooking.

More people will send Christmas greeting by email, text, phone... The cost of postage has rocketed in the past few years because fewer people are sending letters. Way to encourage customers to use your service - let them down when they need you most.

Oh awesome. We bank at the post office, which means we can't bank, which puts us at higher risk of robbery. I mean not my shop specifically, we're very low-risk because of the location (right next to busy bus stop) and layout (two sides of the shop are entirely glass so it's totally open view)... but this will affect every shop that banks with the post office and there are plenty that are out of view down dodgy streets.

In terms of actual postage though, I buy pretty much everything on Amazon anyway and it's all delivered by a bloke in his car who lives a couple of streets over .

Me too. I've done all my Christmas shopping in Amazon except a few bits I like to buy in local shops. And the woman from the next farm delivers it in her Volvo estate full of dogs.

So much better than joining in the utter madness that is Christmas Shopping in town. And I don't have to Park and Ride for it.

Amazon Prime has been one of the best and worst things that's ever happened.

Best: Order pretty much anything and it shows up in my shed the next day!

Worst: Didn't realise that my primary payment method had switched to my credit card and am about Ł3000 down . Wups.

Unfortunately Amazon prime is pretty useless for me because the free delivery only applies to the UK

. Sometimes you can order at like 9pm and it shows up before 1pm the next afternoon! It's sorcery...

Only thing I'd moan about re: Amazon Prime is that it takes the full subscription in one chunk rather than spreading it out over the year. Forgot about it last year (have had it for nearly 3 now) and it was quite the unwelcome dent in my wage the week after Christmas 2015.

And yeah this news is going to screw me over a bit. Have got 3 gifts left to post and haven't bought one of them yet

You can just cut out the middle-man though. Loads of couriers you can book through their website, and they'll collect the parcel from your door and deliver to where it needs to be, not Post Office ever involved. Part of why they're struggling, I'd imagine.

Just be wary of MyHermes - it was them who left my wife's brand new iPhone in the recycling bin of a house 4 doors down last year, leaving only a note saying "Blue Bin".
