Default Should we keep dangerous animals in zoos

A female zoo keeper was killed by a tiger two days ago in a uk zoo.
Should we keep dangerous animals in zoos?
Should zoos be open to the public?
Is there any benefit from seeing a wild animal in a cage ?

I ****ing hate zoos. I don't understand why they still exist. People kicked up such a massive fuss about Shamu the killer whale. Why stop there? Lions, tigers, elephants, giraffes. Literally anything that is being forced into a cage is terrible.

The counter argument is that theyre there because of aid, they cant survive alone in the wild

Thats cool. Help them. Why breed them? Swapping an animal from one zoo with an animal from another zoo to avoid incest is purely for profit. You dont care about helping that animal, you just want their money.

I hate it so much. Its cruel for large animals, its cruel for small animals. No animal exists to be locked in a cage.

I am in two minds about this, nothing to do with the public, more to do with the animals.
In an ideal world no wild animal should be caged or contained, however, if it is a breeding programme to stop them becoming extinct then fine.
But even then, in the country of origin in wide open spaces.

Hmm. Didnt think of the breeding aspect to stop them from extinction. I'm not sure if a public zoo is the best place for that though. They're still locked in a cage for life.

I don't think any animal should be kept in captivity unless it has been rescued and is unable to survive in the wild.

This is a difficult one,I don't like to see wild animals caged up and that is what a zoo effectively does,I prefer a safari Park, but even that is not ideal,it would be ideal for them to live in their own habitat in their own surroundings, but this is where the most dangerous animal in the world comes in,bloody humans, who think they have the right to shoot and poach the animals, then decide they are getting scarce,so decide to cage them just incase we get to a point where we lose a species, maybe we could just leave things alone that really do not need us interfering, I don't think that will ever happen though,so safari Parks would be the way to go.

Capturing and encaging wild animals is wrong - even when feeding them and taking care of them. The whole "saving them from the cruel natural habitat on the outside world" is as logical as Natascha Kampusch's story. Let nature be nature. Kids can hardly learn anything about animals in a cell more then seeing them on "Planet Earth", NG and Discovery.
This is not educative, not altruism. selfishness.

It's cruel. - like us they get one life and should live it in their natural environment or as mentioned in safari parks.

Yeah, ideally large protected reserves for them would be great but you'll still get people hunting them there even with security

no, if they are in the wild, poachers could be hunting them down which is more cruel to me personally

My cousin-in-law's girlfriend works in conservation and her views on it are quite interesting; basically she would rather that zoos etc. didn't have to exist, and would love to see an end to the need for zoos, but that as things stand currently they are vital in preserving many species.

I don't like seeing animals, or birds for that matter, in cages. If they can't keep them in something approaching their natural habitat they shouldn't keep them at all.

Oh, and cut the hands off scumbags who poach wild animals.
