''video game addiction'' umm if it wasn't for video games kids/teens would be just brats all day long, playing video games is a good distraction i guess

i'm currently playing games like yahtzee, mahjong on the computer, and other games such as first person shooters/football on the ps3

if they would take all this away from me i would be a huge rebel in the house 24/7

so i kinda disagree with this from the NHS

yes ok fair enough, i've also heard colouring books, puzzle books make you also really calm

so maybe a fun colouring and games book might be good for kids, same goes for puzzles which is educative yet fun

having said that, video games had given the kids more distractions which has been a good thing

What a great idea, it is just basically rehab but like any addiction it's not really going to work unless the person being rehabilitated wants it.
Dragging someone off for a couple of weeks will literally achieve nothing.

NHS addiction experts will start treating children for 'gaming addiction' at a specialist centre from September.

A group of 15 patients is being picked for the trial. Those signed up so far are aged between 12 and 20.

Patients will be assessed by the Central and North West London NHS trust. The pilot's founder, addiction expert Dr Henrietta Bowden-Jones, told the Daily Telegraph patients will be assessed so doctors can better understand their disorders.

Dr Bowden-Jones, who previously founded a gambling addiction clinic, said: "We'll record in depth everything we can in order to develop the largest database in the country to better understand the illness."
Sounds good if it helps to better understand it so they can develop effective treatment options in the future.

Meh. I'm quite admittedly addicted to gaming but I also have a job, spend time with my family, eat well and exercise plenty and that's all that really matters . The problem isn't being hooked on gaming, unless it involves not making time to do anything else.

Plus I'd rather be addicted to gaming than to alcohol or gambling like 90% of the rest of the adult population . "Wine o'clock" facebook mummies and "craft beer / whisky enthusiast" daddies whinging about gaming addiction whilst casually ignoring their own low level alcoholism. You couldn't make it up.

No one has whinged yet, so you could, and actually did make it up.

I don't really believe it exists tbh. I think obsession is being mistaken for addiction and by treating it like an addiction, you probably won't fix the underlying issues.

Isn't there an overlap?

If someones so obsessed its affecting every other aspect of their lofe surely it classes as an addiction?

I'm not talking about this forum / this thread Parmy, I'm talking about the Facebook pitchfork parents who spend their days wringing their hands over things like video games.

Then they pack their kids off to bed and wash down a couple of citalopram with a bottle and a half of chenin blanc, and think nothing of it.

There is game addiction, but it doesn't go on forever, so it is largely self regulating

To be honest that's rarely what happens... When it becomes "too much" it's more common that people are already having trouble in their social or school life (or both) and are using gaming as an escape mechanism. It's the underlying problems that need addressing (friends, active hobbies, etc.) because it's perfectly possible to be a gaming enthusiast and play a fair amount, and still have other things going on.

Gaming addiction does exist but it's mainly in competitive online gaming and MMO's. They have a fast effort/reward cycle that can be similar to slot gambling (in terms of effect) and trigger a pavlovian response. I think, for example, Fortnite "addiction" may well exist BUT it's also not like a classic addiction, because I also believe that most of these games have a limited lifespan and will go out of fashion, so for the vast majority of people the addiction is self-limiting (unlike other addictions).

I can understand this if it is more about the predatory microtransaction part that is sneaking into some games, which is basically gambling.

I get it being set-up if it's for people that literally just play Video Games 24/7, or as Toy Soldier and Dia have said on here if it's for the microtransactions that is creeping into some Games.

honestly if my mam used to like forcefully try and turn my xbox off on a school night then i remember striking her with my xbox controller and we'd be in a full blown fight she once had the wire from my turtle beach round my neck while i was pummeling her with a lucozade sport bottle gasping for air at 2am in the morning

Sue Call of Duty! Say that you had never considered gambling before, but then you got hooked on COD microtransactions, and that developed into real gambling. Make them pay you for every bet you've ever lost...
