Default Antiques shop is slammed as 'outdated and offensive' for selling 'N**ger money banks'

Antiques shop is slammed as 'outdated and offensive'
for selling 'N**ger money banks' and golliwogs playing
musical instruments

  • The items were on display in glass cabinets in Memories Antiques, Ramsbottom,
  • Anti-racism charity Hope not Hope said they were 'outmoded' and 'appalling'
  • Shopper John Pearce said he understood why people would find items offensive
  • Memories Antiques said the money banks have now been removed from sale

An antiques shop has been slammed after selling an 'appalling' haul of racist memorabilia including 'N****R
money banks' and golliwogs playing musical instruments.

The items include a pair of what are described
on their £65 price tags as 'N**GER money banks'
and the reviled children's book The Story Of Little Black S*mbo for £23.

Also on display are ceramic figures of golliwogs
playing musical instruments for £12 each and
another offensively caricature-esque money bank of 'Smilin' Sam From Alabam' for £52.

The final 'offensive' items are three sets of eight
golliwogs playing musical instruments - for £10 each.

The collectables are openly displayed in glass
cabinets in Memories Antiques in the centre of
the Greater Manchester market town of Ramsbottom.

A spokesperson for anti-racism charity
Hope not Hate said: 'This is outdated, outmoded and offensive.
We're well into the 21st century, not the early 20th.

'It's appalling to use the N-word to describe anything.

'It seems on the face of it pretty amazing that
somebody in this day and age is still selling these
things, particularly with that kind of terminology.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ney-banks.html

What do you think?

I have sold 2 of these thngs in the past
(not using the terms here i may add)
and these still come up at auction now and then (again the auctioneer would term them now as "ethnic")

By the way if you wnat to get an idea about the
charity mentioned in the article just have a look at their website to get a wee idea at what their agenda is

It's going to be outdated given these are antiques, its in the definition of the word.

I don't think we should be destroying or wiping out these things. To me it highlights the progress that has been made since those times, and it's a good reminder of how things used to be.

I think it's easy to say that as a white person as well though, when these antiques are basically mocking black people

not now its isnt and back then I doubt that was the intention - it was a novelty item like a black face would have been to 99.99% people

It was made to sell

not Smiling Sam from Alabam

racism has always been a thing, just back then it was more "natural" hence not seen as a problem
a bit like homos seens as perverts, perfectly natural back then

I agree about it being dangerous to attempt to erase the past but these belong in a museum with proper educational context attached; not still out being bought and sold privately.

It's not right to sell them like they are every day items. They have historical value and there's a lesson to be learned from them but to sell them like they are some sort of curio is grotesque.

I agree although I would probably still side-eye the shop keepers for trying to make money off of items like this... how did they even aquire them in the first place what made them think 'this is just what the store needs' loool

Wait... was there a time racism wasn't a "thing"
What kind of utopia era did I miss hearing about.

Seems strange they'd have multiple items like this, if it was just one it probably wouldnt have been as big of a deal as it is

.

Clearly they should go to some sort of museum, the shopowner shouldn't be trying to make money off racist artefacts
