Wake up Boris, Tory voters want to see our borders controlled properly
As Parliament resumes this week, there is a growing restlessness among Conservative backbenchers about the performance of their government - especially the often absent Prime Minister. From the exam results fiasco to the increasingly bizarre application of quarantine rules, they sense that this government is losing credibility with the public over their competence when it comes to running the country. Their U-turns are embarrassing and increasingly regular. But out in the constituencies, including many in the red wall that secured the big Tory majority last December, there is another conversation that is growing. It is a topic that proved to be a disaster for the Cameron Premiership, led to the Brexit referendum result and is now beginning to come back to haunt the Conservative Party once again. It is, of course, immigration. To many that leant their vote to Boris Johnson and the Conservatives at the last General Election, getting Brexit done meant that strong border controls would be put in place and that fewer people would be settling in the country. But Boris Johnson himself never really saw it this way, always emphasising that taking back control of our borders mattered far more than exercising that control. Despite that, his manifesto in 2019 pledged to fix our immigration system and implement an Australian-style points system. The promise was clear; overall numbers would come down and voters fully understood this. There was little comment last week when the Office for National Statistics produced its figures showing that net migration in the year up to March reached 313,000 – we are back at peak immigration. In fact, net migration rose by a staggering 92,000 compared to the previous year. When one considers that the United Kingdom is already home to a quarter of Europe’s illegal immigrants, around 1.2 million, the numbers are simply mind-boggling. But these figures will not be ignored for long, nor the impact they will have when the furlough scheme ends and unemployment rises sharply. The issue that is changing that conversation amongst Conservatives in the country, even if most of our media choose to ignore it, is the rapidly rising number of illegal immigrants crossing the channel by inflatable dinghies on every calm day. The public are increasingly furious that we are unable to prevent what many see as an invasion. Over 5,000 people so far this year have come, including 1,500 in August, and thus far in September the numbers are rising even more sharply. Polling shows that an astonishing 97% of Conservative voters are concerned or very concerned about this traffic. Tough words from the Home Secretary and the sight of Royal Air Force aircraft and military drones in the Channel does little more than to prove our own impotence. Perhaps the knock-on effect of this for MPs in red wall constituencies is even more serious. From Warrington to Barrow-in-Furness, and many parts of the North East, we see seats that were won from Labour last time that now have hotels that have been filled up with new arrivals. I have visited many of these areas and was able to gauge the level of local disquiet. Far from taking back control, it appears to these voters that we have now completely lost control. In fact, this growing discontent is already damaging Boris Johnson. Polling conducted by JL Partners should come as a sharp warning for the Prime Minister – when asked ‘Which party would do a better job on immigration?’ the gap between Labour and the Conservatives is closing rapidly. Just 27% of people thought the Conservatives would best handle the immigration issue, down 11% from January. Labour currently stands at 21%, a 7% improvement. The fact that illegal immigration is now costing taxpayers £1bn-a-month is the least of the government’s troubles. The electorate are clearly losing trust in them on this vital issue. Many in Westminster were delighted that after the referendum in 2016 this issue disappeared from the public debate, having dominated it for many years. The public thought that this issue had been dealt with. They are now waking up to the fact that even with Brexit, the numbers are rising to record levels both legally and illegally. There is one U-turn the Prime Minister needs to make, that is the reversal of his metropolitan liberal attitude to this issue. During his time as Mayor of London he even went as far as to suggest we should offer large scale amnesties to illegal immigrants in London. He needs to wake up to where Conservative voters are on this issue because, overwhelmingly, they want proper border controls and reduced numbers of immigration. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics...lled-properly/ |

The BBC's new Director-General (left) has warned staff who want to be opinionated columnists or woke online campaigners 'You should not be working here' His latest comments came in his first official speech in Cardiff on Thursday lunchtime after taking over from Lord Tony Hall (top inset). It followed Newsnight host Emily Maitlis (bottom right) and Gary Lineker (top right) sparking rows over remarks or social media posts which have been said to have shown partiality https://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/index.html time for a sacking.. |

"As we know refugees have always helped to keep our communities safe and make our society stronger. " Its a false statement and who is WE and does he actually mean LEGAL migrants who settle in the UK? Once again he is conflating legal migration with illegal economic migration and frankly i cant believe in 2020 he is trying to get away with that and i hope the new DG at the BBC deals with him. |

Is abuse of the asylum system a figment of the imagination (as some claim)?
No. The Home Office’s assertion has been partially corroborated by similar findings by the Independent Chief Inspector of Borders who wrote in a 2017 report(see p.7): ‘There is… considerable evidence of individuals who have been issued with removal directions making ‘last minute’ asylum claims… in order to frustrate planned removals‘. Separately, David Wood, a former Director General of Immigration Enforcement wrote the following in a Civitas reportpublished just last year: “For illegal immigrants who are encountered the asylum process provides a default route to delay, and often avoid, deportation. Individuals seeking to abuse the UK immigration system who are encountered by immigration officials would routinely raise different forms of legal challenge, including asylum claims, as the evidence is clear that the longer the individual manages to remain in the UK, the more likely they are to avoid deportation.” Judges have also noted major problems. For example, Lady Justice Sharp and Mr Justice Green said in a ruling in April 2018 that misconduct among immigration lawyers who start court hearings simply to thwart attempts to remove failed asylum seekers was of “deep concern” (see Policy Exchange, July 2018). It is clear that abuse has been and is occurring. Is it increasing? The NAO report acknowledges evidence of increasing numbers of claims against removal at late stages in the process. Questions remain about the reasons for the increase, but the fact that the Home Office sees it as the result of an ‘increase in abuse’ is concerning in itself. The open borders lobby seems to be in denial about the abuse and the range of shortcomings in the asylum process. https://news.migrationwatchuk.org/20...-asylum-system |

Migration watch has a less than stellar record and reputation, often criticised and fact checked for using misleading information.
Is this the tweet of an academic and independent organisation?

White Cliffs lit up with ‘refugees welcome’ ahead of protests over crossings...
The words “Rise above fear. Refugees welcome” have been beamed onto the White Cliffs of Dover ahead of planned protests on Saturday. The iconic Kent landmark was lit up with a series of massive projections in support of migrant welfare. The messages included “These cliffs mean hope” and tributes to Syrian boy Alan Kurdi on the fifth anniversary of his tragic death. The spectacle lit up the cliffside on Friday night and was organised by humanitarian charity Freedom From Torture. It comes amid fears of violence in Dover as rival groups are expected to assemble to demonstrate over migrant crossings on Saturday. Sonya Sceats, Chief Executive of Freedom from Torture, said: “The government thinks that by stoking fear about the Channel crossings it can distract us from its political blunders and get away with plans to dismantle our civil liberties. “But the hatred it has fomented for political ends is getting out of control.” A heavy police presence in the town is anticipated given the levels of disorder in the past. Both pro and anti-immigration activists have announced their intention to gather in the Kent port, despite a plea from local MP Natalie Elphicke to “stay away”. ....full article... https://uk.news.yahoo.com/white-clif...230104374.html ...’Rise above Fear - Refugees welcome’ ....... |
