I think you can make it invite only and so that only members can see the content, that's how the 18+ one was

Pretty sure James used to make social groups if they were needed for games, like the Quiz etc

That's not social groups its user groups, its different.

Kate like Matt said you can set it to invite members and only they can see the content, it still shows up on the main page though.
