I've watched a few episodes and it confuses me. I guess it's the Netflix effect. The visual effects and cinematography is amazing... movie-standard, really, as is often the case when Netflix money is behind a show these days.

But the acting and dialogue scripting is SO inconsistent? Some of it is great, whilst some of it is melodramatic and B-movie quality, and you don't know which you're going to get from one scene to the next.

I mentioned it to my wife last night actually (she pretty much doesn't do sci-fi as a rule so I watch these things on my lonesome) and I think what I said was, I'm not sure if I like it but it's good enough to keep watching in an "I've started so I'll finish" sort of way

I actually went through this in three days. I agree with TS that the writing is a bit naff in places and definitely a bit over dramatic. Some of it was overly convenient to suit the purpose of some of the action but if you like sci fi then it’s a great show to watch. I thought the overall story was great and I hope we get a second series to see what happens next.

I think part of the issue is the premise not matching the reactions of the characters a lot of the time... like one example is the two crew members taking off their helmets on the alien planet. Who trained these people?? .

And I also feel like they leaned too heavily into "swearing being allowed" to the point where it's used in ways that don't really make sense... like them all shouting "WAT THE F **********CK???? Reeeeee!!" when things are hitting the fan. Like... this is a space mission full of highly trained professionals... is no one even vaguely in control of their reactions?

I actually ended up enjoying this. It's definitely B-movie stuff but I'm an SG-1 fan so...

i think one has to recall the original star trek and next generation and remember how blinking awful they were when evaluating new Sci Fi

I find the bizarre thing with new Sci Fi though... is that CGI has become so much easier to do well these days. So any and all random little Sci Fi shows - no matter how low the quality of the writing - still LOOKS amazing. Whereas back in the olden days it was the opposite - some really well-written and acted shows had absolutely shocking special effects and prosthetics . Season 1 Buffy ...

This one for example, the writing is actually OK, the acting is mixed (some is great some is questionable) but the effects quality is better than you'd have seen in a lot of high-budget Hollywood movies even 10-15 years ago.
