Thumbs down BBC considering dropping Rule Britannia & Land Hope & Glory from Last Night at Proms

BBC 'is considering dropping Rule Britannia and Land of Hope and
Glory from Last Night of the Proms in wake of BLM protests' because organisers
fear backlash over their links to colonialism and slavery

  • Conductor Dalia Stasevska 'believes concert is perfect moment to bring change'
  • Crowds will be absent from the Last Night on September 12 amid Covid-19 crisis
  • Rule, Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory are traditionally performed at event

British anthems Rule, Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory could be axed
from the BBC Proms amid the Black Lives Matter movement, an insider has
claimed.

The broadcaster is considering dropping the patriotic songs from the Last
Night concert due to fears of criticism because of their apparent links to
colonialism and slavery, the Times reported.

Dalia Stasevska, who is conducting the Last Night on September 12, is said
to believe 'a ceremony without an audience is the perfect moment to bring
change.'

'Dalia is a big supporter of Black Lives Matter,' a source added.

Oof I can smell the backlash, far too progressive I welcome it but I'll be very surprised if it comes off.

I've never liked Rule Brittania.

I love Land of Hope and Glory also Jerusalem.
So would like them intact.

...the article also says...

‘But this year, the orchestra is expected to be around half its usual size due to social distancing guidelines introduced by the Government in the wake of the pandemic.

Only 18 singers are expected to perform.

In other measures introduced amid the Covid-19 outbreak, performers will have their temperatures checked on arrival and robotic cameras will replace human operators.

Jan Younghusband, head of BBC music TV commissioning, has confirmed the content of the Last Night concert is still under review.

She said: 'We have a lot of problems about how many instruments we can have. It is hard to know whether it is physically possible to do [Rule Britannia].

'Some of the traditional tunes, like Jerusalem, are easier to perform … We also don't know if we'll be in a worse situation in two weeks' time.'

...a few changes this year, obviously, due to COVID related restrictions...and just a typical DM headline...

No, it’s not, they’re doing it off their own backs.

This is the problem with hollow gestures by big businesses, it generates bad feelings towards minorities that have no interest in what they’re saying they’ll do

Bit pointless really - the kind of people who whinge about Rule Britannia probably wouldn't be able to sit through orchestral and choral music anyway

What's more, black people born in Britain are Britons, so the songs apply to them too.

The other channels are self-funded through advertising revenue/optional subscriptions Nicky... The BBC is funded by a non-optional license fee. It's the only one that can be defunded. For all the others, people can "vote with their feet" by simply not watching the channel, if they have reason to.

They're not funded by the license fee, they're funded by ads. ITV (traditionally "channel 3" when there weren't things like cable and satellite) stands for "Independent Television" because they were the first self-funded channel separate to the BBC. Ch4 and Ch5 didn't exist until much later and neither have anything to do with the BBC license fee.

Their big-name shows (e.g. Doctor Who) will likely be snapped up by the various streaming companies and the rest... . Either that or the BBC itself will restructure as a subscription-based streaming service, where they'd probably do fine (downsized).

Just close the proms down all together if that's the feeling.

In fact, let's ban all patriotic songs the world over.
