Default Australia demands answers - women taken from Qatar Airways flight & strip searched...

..this is prehistoric, it’s totally staggering...

The Australian government has said it is “deeply concerned” at the “offensive, grossly inappropriate treatment” of female passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Sydney, who were ordered to disembark the plane in Doha and were subjected to a strip search and a medical examination.

Flight QR908 to Sydney was due to leave Hamad International airport at Doha at 8.30 on Friday 2 October, but was delayed for four hours, apparently after a newborn infant was found in the airport.

On Monday morning a spokeswoman from foreign affairs minister Marise Payne’s office said the Australian government was “deeply concerned at the unacceptable treatment of some female passengers on a recent Qatar Airways flight at Doha Airport”.

“The advice that has been provided indicates that the treatment of the women concerned was offensive, grossly inappropriate, and beyond circumstances in which the women could give free and informed consent,” the spokeswoman said.

“The government has formally registered our serious concerns about this incident with Qatari authorities. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is engaged on this matter through diplomatic channels.”

Payne later told reporters the matter was “a grossly, grossly disturbing, offensive, concerning set of events”, which had been reported to the Australian federal police.

“It is not something that I have ever heard of occurring in my life, in any context. We have made our views very clear to Qatari authorities on this matter,” Payne said.

She said it had been taken up with the Qatari ambassador in Canberra and she expected to see the local authorities’ report on what happened at the airport.

Asked whether the earlier statement on “free and informed consent” meant she was suggesting the women had been sexually assaulted, Payne said: “No, I am not suggesting that because I have not seen the detailed report of the events.”

She said the women had been provided with “appropriate support” while they underwent quarantine on arrival in Australia.

In a statement provided to the ABC, the airport confirmed the premature baby was alive.

“At this time, the newborn infant remains unidentified, but is safe under the professional care of medical and social workers,” the statement said.

“Medical professionals expressed concern to officials about the health and welfare of a mother who had just given birth and requested she be located prior to departing.”

It’s understood the woman who gave birth has not been located, and the airport is still requesting that those with information come forward.

Among the 34 passengers on board was Dr Wolfgang Babeck, who was returning to Australia after spending a month in Germany with his ailing father.

Babeck told Guardian Australia that, after about three hours of waiting on board the plane, the airline requested that all the women on board disembark. They returned some time later, and “most of them were very upset”, he said.

“At least one of them was crying, they were discussing what had happened and saying that it was unacceptable and disgusting.”

The plane was then allowed to take off. Babeck said he then spoke to some of the female passengers, who said they had been taken off the plane and led into a non-public area of the airport and subject to a medical examination.

“They were taken by security personnel into the cellar, not knowing what was going on,” he said. “And then they were presented to a female doctor and they were basically strip-searched and had to take everything downwards off, all their clothes, even their underwear.

“And then the doctor would try to feel in the uterus and stomach area or lower abdomen to see whether they may have given birth recently.

“Someone had been told that a baby had been found in the toilet and they were trying to find out who the mother was.”

Channel Seven, which first reported the story on Sunday, said the inspections involved 13 Australian women, and took place in an ambulance on the runway.

Qatar Airways told Guardian Australia it had not been contacted by any of the passengers on the flight and said it could not comment.

“We appreciate the concerns and distress expressed to you by the Australian passengers who you have spoken to, and will be investigating these matters with the relevant authorities and officials,” a spokesperson said.

Goodness me, was this the only flight involved? I know we refer to it often on here but this is Handmaids Tale level of abuse

...excuse me...?..I do hope, Arista that you’re not suggesting any justification there...people’s rights/privacy’s/freedoms cannot be infringed on in such a way...it’s abhorrent, unthinkable...’we will authorise our own medical examination on a female to ensure she hasn’t given birth...’...it’s staggering...

To be honest I’m not even shocked by this story.

These countries need to be black listed.

i’m not stupid Arista, you don’t need to spell out why they did it, so I presume you would be happy to be strip searched and have some man stick his hand up your bum because someone deemed it appropriate that every man on your flight be examined in this way for drug carrying, without your consent?

Kim Mills was one of nine women taken off a Qatar Airways flight in Doha, and the only one not to be strip-searched as authorities hunted the mother of an abandoned newborn baby...the reason for Kim not being subjected to the same was because she had some grey hair, she’s in her 60’s...so unlikely to have given birth...

...an Australian female diplomat was on board the flight...it hasn’t been said yet whether she was one of the women subjected to the strip-search...

Abandoning a newborn in a public bathroom is a pretty disgusting thing to do. But that obviously doesn't excuse treating the other women like that. Surely there are other ways to see if a woman has jus given birth?

A disgusting abuse of power by this airline, it is sexual abuse and should be treated as such.

Quite an ignorant thing to say

Most new mothers don't abandon babies, chances are the mother is someone who is in need of help, you don't know her circumstances.

As for the second bold point, it's not the airline's concern to touch it's passengers to find the mother in any context. The proper response would be to call the authorities and let them do their own investigations, not drag a bunch of women from a flight and feel them up.

Absolutely. If they thought for whatever reason the mother was on that flight, police should have been called and the women should have been interviewed, as well as the men btw

It's no one's fault but the airline for deciding to assault a bunch of women instead of letting the authorities do their own investigations.
