This Witch doesn't burn

The daughter of Dubai's ruler who tried to flee the country in 2018 later sent secret video messages to friends accusing her father of holding her "hostage" as she feared for her life. In footage shared with BBC Panorama, Princess Latifa Al Maktoum says commandos drugged her as she fled by boat and flew her back to detention. The secret messages have stopped - and friends are urging the UN to step in. Dubai and the UAE have previously said she is safe in the care of family. Ex-UN rights envoy Mary Robinson, who had described Latifa as a "troubled young woman" after meeting her in 2018, now says she was "horribly tricked" by the princess's family. The former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and president of Ireland has joined calls for international action to establish Latifa's current condition and whereabouts. "I continue to be very worried about Latifa. Things have moved on. And so I think it should be investigated," she said. BBC 1 8.30 Panorama

It's a fascinating story, but not one I could really have a lot to say about at the mo, because I don't really know enough. The father nearly bought Liverpool in 2007, but I'll give panorama a watch.
If what's being feared turns out to be the truth, then it's absolutely horrific.

just heard a clip on the radio, she had lunch with the step mother Hafa? who has also subsequently fled, but at the time Hafa told her Latifa was bipolar and they were just trying to keep her safe, and she accepted that as fact I think there is another daughter as well who escaped to the UK but was taken back and never seen again

May I please respectfully ask why is this in TV chat.
I was looking for it and couldn't find it. Until I checked the post I'd made previously. This woman may have even lost her life, surely this isn't a TV chat issue. Just asking? Not meaning this in a critical way, I'm just confused..it's why I don't bother much making threads as it would likely be in the wrong section anyway when I did. This just seems a very serious issue indeed as to this Woman. Last edited by joeysteele; 16-02-2021 at 06:57 PM. |

My apologies to all.
I see why now as I'm watching it now. I was confused as it seems a very serious issue, thinking she is imprisoned in effect and may even have lost her life. However my question is answered. |

The United Nations has said it will raise the detention of Princess Latifa, the daughter of Dubai's ruler, with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Princess Latifa has accused her father of holding her hostage in Dubai since she tried to flee the city in 2018. In secretly recorded videos shared with the BBC, Princess Latifa said she feared for her life. The footage prompted global calls for the UN to investigate the matter. The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has now responded, suggesting it would question the UAE about Princess Latifa. A spokesman said the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention could launch an investigation once Princess Latifa's videos have been analysed. The UK Foreign and Development Office said it was a concerning case and, although it was not directly involved, it would follow developments closely. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-56093100 ...it’s like the most unbelievable and terrifying movie plot...just horrendous... |

Princess Latifa: New photo emerges of Dubai royal in Iceland as campaign to free her is disbanded…
The campaign to free Princess Latifa, the daughter of the ruler of Dubai, has been disbanded after a new image of her in Iceland was posted on Instagram. Several pictures of the princess have been posted online by Sioned Taylor, a long-term friend, in recent months. The princess had not been seen in public since her failed attempt to flee the UAE in 2018. In secret video messages passed to Sky News in February, the Dubai royal claimed her father was holding her hostage. The latest image shows the 35-year-old standing with Ms Taylor and her cousin, Marcus Essabri, in Iceland. "Great trip to Iceland with Latifa and Marcus," Ms Taylor captioned the post. She had posted a picture with Latifa in Madrid in June, with previous photos showing the pair at a restaurant in Dubai. In a follow-up post on the Free Latifa campaign website, Mr Essabri said: "I had an emotional reunion with my cousin Latifa in Iceland. "I feel blessed that I got to spend time with her. It was reassuring to see her so happy, well and focused on her plans." The campaign said it was disbanding following the meeting between the princess and Mr Essabri in Iceland. "The primary purpose of the FreeLatifa campaign was to see Latifa free leading the life she chooses for herself," the group said. "We have clearly gone a long way towards achieving that goal over the last three years, with bodies such as the United Nations now monitoring the current and future wellbeing of Latifa. "The FreeLatifa campaign would like to thank everyone who supported the campaign to FreeLatifa." "It's a very positive development and it's the best position she's been in for almost two decades," David Haigh, co-founder of the Free Latifa campaign, told Sky News. "But we need to approach everything with caution given the history. Since the first pictures of Latifa on Instagram accounts began appearing in late spring, we have been cautious to welcome it as a positive development. "Given what Mary Robinson, a former world leader, said about being horribly tricked and making the worst mistake of her life - her words - over taking part in a photographic cover-up, we proceeded then as we do now, with caution." His comments referred to the former United Nations high commissioner for human rights who was pictured alongside the princess on Christmas Eve in 2017. The former Irish president later said appearing in the photos was one of the biggest mistakes of her life. "The international community, including the UN and world leaders, will no doubt be watching the behaviour of the UAE and how it relates to Latifa now," Mr Haigh added. Latifa tried to escape from her family in March 2018 by attempting to sail across the Indian Ocean, but she was brought back to Dubai in what the royal family said was a rescue mission. She was not seen or heard from in public until earlier this year, when she claimed in secret videos released to Sky News that she was a "hostage" and had been beaten, drugged and imprisoned then locked away under armed guard in a royal villa. https://uk.yahoo.com/news/princess-l...160500230.html |
