[Following a lengthy legal fight,
the UK's highest court ruled against the taxi app firm and concluded drivers should be classed as workers, not independent third-party contractors, which means they are entitled to basic employment protections, including minimum wage and holiday pay.] https://news.sky.com/story/uber-lose...-test-12222531 If Uber keep this ruling prices will go up. James O'Brien on LBC interviewed the Irish Uber London Driver who was assaulted but UBER would not help him. He brought this case a long time ago.

Support local cab firms instead of a huge international company.

There's no reason that a large company structure is needed for this these days. An app developer could easily make an app that any small cab company could use (even individual self-employed drivers). Being able to book and track your taxi via app is just far, far more convenient than phone call + cash... I can't see any reason for taking a backwards step and doing it "the old way" is only going to become more and more outdated, especially as we're not all that far from "in city" cabs not having drivers at all. |

Uber as it is must be lucrative for the drivers otherwise there wouldnt be so many of them.
If they want benefits of employment then they should go work for another company. They should be paid less on their new contracts to make up for these new benefits.

I do think it's complicated and something that needs consideration, because - for example - a lot of drivers are supplementing other income, and it's not really as possible (or at least as easy) to do that on an employee basis. It's a double-edged sword in that, yes, you get the mandatory protections, guaranteed minimum wage, paid vacation and sick leave etc. but the other side of it is potentially having a mandatory minimum hours you'd be expected to work in a week, shift patterns set by a manager, etc... things that not everyone wants in a second income. Although, they could work it like the "bank staff" system in healthcare, where available blocks/shifts are advertised for the area and people can pick them up in whatever way suits them best.

Brilliant.
These drivers should have the same rights as the rest of us. |
