Default Seaspiracy - Should we eat fish?

Netflix doco.

Basically we shouldn't eat fish at all because all current commercial fishing methods are completely unsustainable and are ruining the planet.

How do you feel about the idea of eliminating fish from your diet?

Spoiler for what was the "conspiracy" of the documentary is.

Spoiler:

Or at least I think this is a spoiler.
Basically I think the documentary was trying to say that we are being tricked into thinking our plastic use is a big issue and also Japanese whaling is damaging our oceans, but really these are just a tiny drop in the ocean (excuse the pun) compared to what our demand for eating fish is causing.

I do think the problem is bigger than people really know... I was at a remote beach on Skye last summer (the type you have to trek to get to) and was absolutely horrified to find it absolutely COVERED in pieces of nets, ropes, mesh etc. ... and I mean covered, every square foot-or-so had at least some sort of debris. It looked like a dumping site. This isn't a beach that people regularly go to, the stuff hadn't been left there by people, and it isn't directly in a fishing area or anything... it's just that it's too remote for anyone to be there clearing up I guess... and all of it was stuff that had simply washed up over time.

Also there's a little beach we go to regularly that's, I can now see, clearly regularly cleaned up/"combed" in usual times because we've been going for years and it's always been pristine fine sand / a popular swimming spot but since Covid with it technically being "closed" - which i guess also means no one bothering to clean it up regularly - I took the dog recently and there's plastic debris everywhere. .

What do fish do for our planet that we would miss if we ate them all?

According to the documentary, maintain the ocean ecosystem that includes the phytoplankton that generates 80% of the world's oxygen.

So "breathing", probably. I dunno guess it depends how you're feeling that day.

We need to kill those wide mouthed whales that gobble them all up in one swoop so the little buggers can make 100 percent of our oxygen.

It's all part of the ecosystem though like the whales are an important part of how the algae pollinates or summat like that, and it's important for coral reefs too or something. I dunno. The documentary is on Netflix, I wasn't paying that much attention, it was all very scary but I'm still going to eat tuna because the planet's ****ed anyway.

I saw some report suggesting that when all the ice melts ... the pure water is forming a new layer UNDER the salt water layer that is normally on the sea floor ... so all the animal / plant life DIES as they can’t survive let alone flourish in the pure/fresh water ...

Sounds like we’re screwed basically given they say that the ice sheets / icebergs are melting at a ridiculous speed.

Would it be possible to feed these plankton when they reach old age, to cows. To make the cows fart oxygen?

So we need to keep the big fish alive that shake all the little plankton things to the surface...

So we need to feed the whales with fish, or seals or penguins. All of them need fish to eat, but mostly any fish will do for them...cod can be our fish.

So we are safe in killing all the whales that eat plankton..yeah?

I think we should just leave the sea alone, to be honest. We've already caused enough destruction on land.
