No recommendations for men not to drink in case it makes them violent and may help stop Domestic violence then?
All women of childbearing age shouldn’t drink alcohol, says WHO All women of childbearing age should avoid drinking alcohol, the World Health Organisation has apparently recommended. A draft Global Alcohol Action Plan published on the organisation’s website said anti-drinking campaigns should target women in particular, regardless of whether or not they intend to get pregnant. It is due to the risk of damaging a baby in the womb but critics have called the advice ‘paternalistic’ and ‘sexist’. The move could mean that millions of women around the world are told to abstain from alcohol for several decades of their lives. It is despite the fact that men are far more likely to die from the effects of alcohol consumption globally. The WHO document states: ‘Appropriate attention should be given to prevention of the initiation of drinking among children and adolescents, prevention of drinking among pregnant women and women of childbearing age, and protection of people from pressures to drink, especially in societies with high levels of alcohol consumption where heavy drinkers are encouraged to drink even more.’ Studies have shown that damage can be done to a foetus by drinking alcohol during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when many women may not yet know they are pregnant. Health bosses therefore recommend anyone trying to get pregnant avoids all alcohol during that period. Aside from pregnancy, NHS guidance states women should not drink more than 14 units of alcohol a week. This equates to around six pints of beer or 10 small glasses or wine and is the same as the guidance for men. Matt Lambert, the chief executive of the Portman Group, the regulator for alcohol labelling, said the WHO had gone ‘well beyond their remit’. He told the Telegraph: ‘We are extremely concerned by the WHO calling on countries to prevent drinking among women of childbearing age in their latest action plan. ‘As well as being sexist and paternalistic, and potentially restricting the freedoms of most women, it goes well beyond their remit and is not rooted in science.’ https://metro.co.uk/2021/06/17/who-s...exgeszo7tH-CvA

It's bizarre and has been largely slammed I think. Abstaining in case you MIGHT be pregnant? .
I can see the logic of it being very good ADVICE for people who are actually trying to get pregnant, as there will be that overlap between getting pregnant and knowing about it, but for people who aren't even trying? Are on birth control? Have husbands with their tubes snipped ? Even if it wasn't horrendously controlling... it doesn't even make sense. |

the WHO needs to be completely restructured. Alcohol affects sperm production etc making it pretty important from a male perspective too. Crazy

…no…’WINE or a BEER CANCELLED…’ etc outrage inducing headlines…?…just a straight forward headline with no misleading emotive phrasing….because it doesn’t involve a photo on a wall being changed or a paragraph added to a website…it would mainly target a control of women and their freedom so no great shakes of outrage and CANCEL….(..is how it feels…)….

..yeah that’s what I mean…adding a paragraph to a website about an author or choosing an alternative pic for a wall…CANCEL OUTRAGE HEADLINE….but hey ho, this is mainly targeting the control and freedom of women…we can be balanced here, no need for concern etc…it’s so funny but actually not at all, sadly….

I was actively encouraged to start drinking when I was pregnant with skye. Apparently i needed guiness and should have a pint or so a day. Ontop of this one of my cravings was blue wkd. Obviously I indulged within reason though, so maybe one a couple of times a week I had, but the deathstares were something to behold! Not drinking ever as your body has the potential to get pregnant is insane.
It may be paranoia or whatever, but I really could see something similar to Gilead happening tbh. It's terrifying, how little some care for women's rights and freedoms.

It's one thing to say don't drink if you think you might be pregnant ..
But to say never drink in case you're pregnant? Ridiculous. |

we are funding the WHO for crap like this and from the way they handled covid, they arent doing themselves any favours. It needs a big restructure and refocus because the people in charge are just not doing the job

Every woman to be tested for cov.....pregnancy before being allowed to walk down the booze aisle in Tesco. Double points on all alcohol if tested negative.

Really weird story. seems like every few years there is a drink/don't drink 1 glass of red per night or some similar story, but this is really oppressive and unnecessary. we have all of lived experience to show that you'll probably be alright having the odd blue nun.
