Default What's better?

The old video shops where we hired videos out in the 80s and 90s or Netflix?

I think that both styles are cool, but I've got Films like Tau thanks to Netflix so I'm voting for them.

You'd get banned from the Shop until you paid the lateness fee.

Voted video shops as it was always a great feeling after a week of school going as a family to blockbuster choosing 2 films and a video game. Then getting the popcorn near the tills

It's funny because there was always a long wait after a film had finished on the cinema to being out on video. So if it's a film you really wanted to see you rush to it and realise there weren't any left. You'd never have that problem now in fact the majority of films on the cinema are out on sky or Netflix or Disney at the same time. So much so that even the cinema feels like it's on its way out now. It's such a shame

There are ways around that you could get a friend or family member to get the videe

Heading out to the video rental place was more like a little "event" and thus more exciting. I think we suffer from "too much choice" these days... I mean, on Amazon Prime you can literally rent basically any film that's ever been made, so instead you spend HOURS trying to figure out which film to watch. With the video store the selection was limited, you picked something, and then when you left with it in your grubby paws that was it. That's what you were watching.

Obviously Netflix is more convenient, but going to the video shop was a whole experience really. Loved it as a kid, you could spend an hour in there looking around and then getting your snacks as well. I do miss them sometimes

I miss our old Blockbuster in my local town. The geeky boys who worked there got to know everyone and they'd recommend stuff they'd think you'd like... you could rent games and buy popcorn... much more of an event than finding a film online, although that is more convenient.

No one else did it so why should I? Then that's me rewinding that video TWICE.

The most ominous ones were the ones when you looked in the little window and could see that it was half-watched. You had to ask yourself, why did the previous renter stop half way through? Was the film terrible? Was it a Blockbuster 'n' Chill situation?

I remember going upstairs to rewind videos on my sister's little "TV and video combo" thing because the video player in the living room took ages rewinding. When I say "ages", it saved maybe 2 minutes to do it on the other one, and that's without factoring in "travel time" up and down the stairs (pretty fast when you're 8 to be fair).

I just can't imagine being willing to expend that energy for the sake of 2 minutes though. Youth privilege.

I liked the DVD-by-post service Lovefilm and other companies did. I saw lots of films through that, and you only got a new disc when you sent one back so that encouraged you to watch to get value out of it.

Thinking back I did quite like video rentals shops too. I remember getting the last episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Generations for instance and watching them as a double-bill.

i got a subscription to netflix in it's early days and it was blinking awful, the ui was a disaster and the choice was abysmal. I still feel that the made by netflix series tend to follow the same formula and become boring and predictable. I think Amazon wins on that aspect

Netflix has a few stand-out shows that are genuinely good... off the top of my head,

Queens Gambit
Stranger Things
The Witcher
Sex Education
After Life
Daredevil (and Punisher, also Season 1 of Jessica Jones)
The Crown
Dark

Though I'm sure there are a few more. However they have dozens and dozens of "originals" so yes, I take your point that the majority of them are formulaic filler-material.

It's a bit cheesy, Gavin didn't like it but me and Luke loved it. The dubbing isn't perfect and will either add to the charm of it for you or turn you right off Also, I love heist films/shows

It might be because it's about a heist and I still maintain that Ocean's 11 is the single most boring movie I have ever seen and it left me a bit traumatised about heists.

In fact the only Heist TV I have ever enjoyed was the Rick & Morty episode "One Crew Over the Crewcoo's Morty" - because it was disparaging of heist tropes.
