Default 10 years since Gary Speed tragically died

A moment that shocked British football and highlighted the depression not only in in game but in men in general.

It's a real shame that over the last 10 years that no progress has been made in men's mental health and suicide remains the single biggest reason of death in younger men.

Tomorrow will be 7 years since my best friend did the same.

The time has flew by. I still remember everything so clearly from the moment I found out.

I was waiting for a bus after doing a 2-10 shift on a Friday night and I rang my brother because we were supposed to be playing poker that night and I was just ringing to make sure they were there. The first thing my brother said was "I 've got some bad news" and I could tell by the tone of his voice that something bad had happened, a million thoughts raced through my mind in a couple of seconds, I thought he was gonna say that one of my parents had died, then he told me and I went into a state of shock. As I hung up the phone the bus came around the corner and I just got on a fairly packed bus in shock with my mind racing. It was about 2-3 hours before I snapped out of it and then burst into tears for days.

I lost a piece of me that night.

I miss him so much.

Time is a healer, but I still break down from time to time, usually when reminiscing like now.

I'm sorry to hear about that Alf.

I can't speak for your friend Alf as I obviously don't know the full circumstances. But in Gary Speed's case I feel like he was at the time not gonna be taken seriously by people if he'd have said that he had Mental Health issues because he was "living a rich lifestyle" and that kinda thinking sadly led to him doing what he did I think.

Also still to this day some people don't quite fully understand people who have Mental Health issues, personally I'm no expert on the subject, but I don't get the hostility towards people who feel suicidal that some people have? We need these people to want to get help, not be so scared to come forward that we then end up having a Gary Speed situation.

With Gary Speed though I remember him being a good player for Bolton & Newcastle.

....Its very hard to understand the dark place someone must be in to take their life. Whether you are male or female it must be the worst place to be. I can only imagine men find it hard to reach out because men are supposed to be 'the stronger sex' and they would deem their insecurities as a 'weakness'. Its just a tragic way to end your life.

Can't imagine how difficult that must have been.

I’m fine thanks mock, to be honest as you get older life makes you harder when dealing with pain.

Things you have to remember is what will be will be and you can’t live someone else’s life for them.

Feel bad for his family and his daughter he has left behind
