Default Sperm doner/ egg doner

What’s your opinion on these?
Could you donate either?

I always planned to be an egg donor as I went through IVF twice but by the time I had my son I was too old

My friend got discounted IVF treatment by doing egg sharing. Half of the eggs they retrieved were given to another family. She got a hefty discount and another family got the shot of pregnancy

I wouldn't do it personally, but each to their own, I have no broader issue with it I just wouldn't want to have offspring out there that I didn't know about

I'm a bit unsure about financial incentives being offered... I think that's a bit of a minefield really. It should be something people do for altruistic reasons because they want to help people, not for monitary reasons, as that can lead to people going ahead with it and then regretting it later.

I understand what you are saying but it was the only way she could have IVF treatment due to the huge costs involved. There is an element of altruism really as you have to have counseling to know that there is still a high probability of failure and by donating you are basically halving your chances of having any eggs to freeze.

Having suffered from fertility problems myself, I always wanted to give something back to help other people who were struggling to conceive. Sadly IVF didn't work for me - neither did any other treatment I had (IUI, IVF with ICSI and other hormone treatment etc) but after I conceived naturally against all odds I went back to ask if I could donate but I was 36 by then so I was too old to donate.

I wouldn't personally as any child from those eggs would be mine biologically so I'd find that too weird. I would be a surrogate though with someone else's eggs if they couldn't carry the baby If it was someone I was very close to, I wouldn't do it for a stranger

I didn't realise until watching a show recently that in America (? I don't know about here?) it seems to be quite common for women to "surrogate" but it's actually just ... their own child? Like they do IVF with the father but it's their egg... and they carry it themselves... but then they give up parental rights. That's surely an absolute minefield, both legally and in terms of mental health, and also I'd imagine for the child who may learn about it / always know about it and then decide at 18 that they want to meet their biological mother.

Surely there's also a huge risk of PPD for the biological mum, too? There's a huge hormonal/instinctual response for mums just after birth being separated from the baby (instictually, we're wired to think that they must have died, even if we know they didn't).

[edit] I just realised that's a pretty big spoiler for the show

Oh jeez no I could never carry my own biological child and then hand it over to someone else. Also, part of the reason I wouldn't surrogate for a stranger would be even if the child wasn't mine biologically I don't think I could emotionally reconcile the situation of carrying the baby for 9 months and then just saying "have a nice life, bye" however if it was a niece or nephew of mine for example, I'm confident I'd be able to see that situation totally differently like I'm enabling a family member to be born and would know them through life

I also wouldn't put my body through that for a stranger

The snip doesn't stop you from producing sperm, it just cuts the tubes that allow them ... freedom.

They can still harvest sperm from the source with a needle .

I wouldn't do it.

I know some people have to do IVF if they're out of options, but I always found surrogacy weird . It's popular in America and people even get paid to do it.
