Default USA: Man gets genetically-modified pig heart

Lucky old Fella
can get back with his Dog

[A US man has become the first person in the
world to get a heart transplant from
a genetically-modified pig.
David Bennett, 57, is doing well three days
after the experimental seven-hour
procedure in Baltimore, doctors say.

The transplant was considered the last hope
of saving Mr Bennett's life,

though it is not yet clear what his
long-term chances of survival are.
"It was either die or do this transplant,"
Mr Bennett explained a day before the surgery.
"I know it's a shot in the dark,
but it's my last choice," he said.
Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center
were granted a special dispensation
by the US medical regulator to
carry out the procedure,
on the basis that Mr Bennett
would otherwise have died.]

I guess, if it was me
I would stay off eating Bacon
for respect to my new heart etc

Read this thread title as “Man gets Guinea-pig heart” and was very confused for a moment.

Penny wants to run free in meadows with her friends

Sadly she will be kidnapped from her mother at a few weeks old
by ‘scientists’ who will rip her open to steal her heart and place in a
selfish human who has had 50 years walking freely
Humans really are heartless

Yes, we just basically kill anything we feel we can, steal their organs flesh and skin, nothing as dangerous than humans.

I have been vegetarian 6 year nearly
No regrets
If I got the chance to live with a pig heart inside me I would decline
I’d rather die
And save the little pig

You say that but I wonder if push came to shove would you really? What if your brother or sister or mother or father were going to to die unless they got a Pig heart, would you be telling them to take it or saying they shouldn't because of the Pig?

Fair play to you glib,Im also a veggie and dont think I would want a pigs heart either, it doesnt belong to me, and enough animals are killed for us already, i do understand that people have different opinions on it and each to their own, just not for me.

Once this gains a bit more publicity I’m sure it will have the same stigma as having a fur coat or snakeskin handbag

It definitely won't, not when it's for medical reasons rather than fashion

I was gonna say the reasoning for this one makes it less black and white versus wearing animal fur.

animal testing has now been outlawed in over 41 countries…
Including the EU

“more than 100 million animals—including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds” peta

“ Around two-fifths (of the uk) say they oppose the testing of completed medicines (41%) and medical ingredients (44%) on animals. ” yougov

I will repeat
Animals should not suffer for humans

BBC report on the controversy
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-59951264

‘ In 1984, doctors in California tried to save a baby girl's life by giving her the heart of a baboon, but she died 21 days later’

‘ unethical, dangerous, and a tremendous waste of resources’

‘ Some campaigners have concerns regarding the unknown long-term effects of genetic modification on the pig's health.’

Well first of all you've moved the goal posts here, you're now talking about medical testing of drugs on animals rather than using animal organs as a life saving procedure and secondally you said "I’m sure it will have the same stigma as having a fur coat or snakeskin handbag" which is blatantly not true, people are never going to think using animals for medical reasons and life saving reasons is on par with using an animal's skin or fur for fashion. And I'm sure a you.gov Poll would have the %'s twice the height for that

where does one draw the line, should a guide dog not be used as an aid to a blind person, should the world be banned from keeping pets?

Lots of moral arguments that could be used concerning animals, but there is no way they will happen
