[Plans to build a huge solar farm in
North Hampshire, capable of powering 17,000 homes, are facing opposition from local residents. Enso Energy has submitted plans to build the 200-acre farm on land between Silchester and Bramley which, if built, would be the size of 140 football pitches. According to the energy company, the farm would take 25,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere every year – an equivalent reduction of 8,000 cars on the road – and supply almost 50MW of clean renewable electricity to the National Grid.] Why moan at essential Power we need. https://www.newburytoday.co.uk/news/...ocals-9194399/ |

Wasting that green space for a solar farm in England is a bit stupid.

I don't agree either... which may be surprising.
Putting those on existing structures and using the land for housing would be a better use of the space if it's availiable.

Being 200 acres of green space is what they're doing, and that's worth a lot more than some numbers on a screen.
If they have the money and resources to do put the panels over the fields, they can put them on roofs. |

While brownfields sites still exist, there is no excuse for destroying the countryside, especially for something as barely-useful as solar. |

"an equivalent reduction of 8,000 cars on the road"
the phrase "piss in the ocean" comes to mind - there are nearly 40 million registered vehicles on the road in the UK and you can easily assume 15-20 million actively on the road regularly. "8000 cars" is nothing. |

Why greenfield and not brown?... it makes no sense.
Unless it's seen by landowners as the soft option. They then don't have to commit to the more pernanant changes of agriculture or urbanisation.

They may do one a brownfield zone This massive Solar farm is perfect there and a supply that will be used right away. Last edited by arista; 20-03-2022 at 01:19 PM. |

they need to be more imaginative in how they locate solar panels. Using green field sites is wrong

It's not in my back yard so that's not my concern, I just don't see the point.

The council last night
Refused this plan. [Bramley solar farm plan rejected by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council A plan to build a solar farm on land equivalent to the size of 100 football pitches has been refused. The company behind the project planned for Bramley, Hampshire, said it would have provided enough energy to power 11,700 family homes. About 680 people formally said they were opposed to it going ahead. Councillors rejected it on the grounds of the impact on the public right of way and hampering exploration of the area's Roman history. The proposed development at Minchens Lane - known as Bramley Frith - would have been operational for up to 40 years and span 85 hectares (210 acres) of agricultural land.] https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan...shire-61170550 |

they could attach solar panels on apartment blocks etc, where they could genuinely make a difference and not interfere with green space

I've seen ads for amazon where they are boasting of their 'green' energy solar farms. It powers only their operations it suggests in the ad. It's a shame everyone can't afford to buy huge swathes of land to go off grid!
Similarly with macdonalds their ad explains how their oil powers their trucks.. neatly bypassing the tax the rest of us pay on fuel.
