Default Van Driver : Drives over Ducklings, he could not wait

[Pictured: Police are investigating allegations
that a van driver killed three ducklings
who were crossing a road in Stoke-on-Trent while
other drivers waited patiently for them to cross]

[Chief Inspector John Owen of Staffordshire Police
has confirmed they are investigating]

This Story was Featured
on the One Hour Newspaper review "Headliners"
GBnewsHD 11PM every night.

[Steven Walley wrote in a Facebook post
which he asked people to share:
'I've just been driving on the A34 at
Trentham Gardens roundabout when a
family of seven ducklings were crossing the road.
All the traffic stopped to let them cross
but disgustingly this van driver,
after initially stopping,
could not then wait for the five seconds
it would have taken to let them cross
and drove straight over them,
crushing three of them.'
Mr Walley said he then followed the van to
a nearby layby,

where he had what he described as a
'very heated conversation' with the driver.

Police said they are trying to establish
if any offences had been committed
under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.]

[A statement posted on Twitter said: 'We are
aware of a post circulating of a
van driver who is believed to
have killed ducklings in Trentham.
'We have made contact with the author of
the post and are establishing potential
offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
'We understand this is an emotive issue
for many people and we ask please
that you do not take matters into your own hands.'
Mark Thomas, lead investigator for the RSPB,
also confirmed they would be on hand
to assist with the investigation if needed.

The original social media post about the
incident has been shared more than 2,500 times.]

I eat eggs and chicken so don't want to be a hypocrite, but I do think there is a difference. He might have willingly and unnecessarily drove over them because of impatience or maybe he just didn't know why people were waiting. I've done it before (not drove over ducklings) where I thought a car was stationary and it turned out they were waiting for another car to pass.

If you read the article he did know as he initially stopped and then drove over them

There’s an awful lot of evidence/research surrounding animal cruelty .. rather disturbing stuff .

Yeah I read it, just wondered whether he wondered what was going and didn't realise what people were waiting for so just went around the cars.

I'm not excusing his behaviour, but just wondering why he would purposely drive over them unless he's just heartless.

He did not care
about them crossing the road.

That's what it came down to.

To play devil's advocate, because the driving position of a van is higher off the ground it's POSSIBLE - depending on where they were - that he couldn't see them and thought they had all passed.

My wife had a bird-death incident a few weeks back... slowed to avoid hitting it, successfully, only for it to fly past and be hit by a truck coming the other way .

They’d still be interacting with people though .. I would not want anything to do with someone who could deliberately harm animals

Looks like the ducks were walking along the middle of the road, rather than crossing it..(my detective skills)

Still no excuse for the driver to squish them, he should have taken more care.

It's nice to see that we're not desensitised to all forms of cruelty in this country yet.

Cruelty to animals is often an indicator that they are like that with humans too
