Lewis Hamilton has said "archaic mindsets need to change" and have no place in Formula 1 after three-time world champion Nelson Piquet used racially abusive language about him.
The 69-year-old Brazilian, who won the world title in 1981, 1983 and 1987, used a racially offensive term to refer to Hamilton in a podcast. Piquet has been condemned by Formula 1, Hamilton's Mercedes team and the FIA. "It's more than language," said seven-time world champion Hamilton. "These archaic mindsets need to change and have no place in our sport. I've been surrounded by these attitudes and targeted my whole life. "There has been plenty of time to learn. Time has come for action." Piquet was discussing the accident between Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen on the first lap of last year's British Grand Prix. |

I could take a guess by his age that maybe it's the words previously used to describe a mixed race person? He maybe isn't aware that that way to describe a mixed race person isn't really acceptable anymore, that's just may speculation though, I have no idea what he said

I'm quite concerned with Hamilton's language in that piece.
"Mindsets need to change" that's very authoritarian language "Time has come for action" That's very threatening language. |

He used a slang term that everyone thinks means the N word, what it actually means is small, or young, black person..
The Portuguese word for black is negro, but the Portuguese use slang or variations of words to mean other things...he described Hamilton as a neguinho which in portuguese slang means young, or small black man. Last edited by parmnion; 28-06-2022 at 02:14 PM. |

You cherry picked those two sentences when in the whole paragraph he's talking about attitudes within his sport, a sport where he's literally the only black/mixed race driver. Apparently, Nelson Piquet referred to him by the "N" word, that's disgraceful and highly unprofessional. Lewis is more than allowed to want to help change attitudes like that towards himself (and black people in general) in his own sport. His reaction to it actually was very restrained and dignified imo.

The Brazilian used a derogatory term in an interview that was given in November last year when speaking about the 2021 British GP.
Piquet, whose daughter Kelly is in a relationship with Red Bull's Max Verstappen, slammed Hamilton's driving at Silverstone where he made contact with the Dutchman on an explosive first lap. Make of that what you will

Do I agree with Piquet's comment? No. Do I think that he is clearly biased to Verstappen because of him dating his (Piquet) daughter? Yes. Do I think that Piquet is a prick for using the N word? Yes. Do I also think that encouraging more hate towards Hamilton for no reason is disgusting? Yes. However I do agree with you that people need to stop judging racist language as the same as the KKK, because if we're being real here there are different scales of racism (and sometimes non-existent) racism that gets treated the same as someone who would kill a black person because of the colour of their skin, in my eyes I feel that the latter is far, far worse, but to some people they treat it like they're both just as bad. Imo some people are just douchebags, that's life and none of us can do anything to change that, all any of us can do without bringing censorship into it (which I never support censorship) is explain to them why they're wrong for saying racist stuff. And going on a wild tangent here, but I still don't like how Kurt Zouma got away with drop kicking a Cat because according to Antonio "why aren't people up in arms like this about racist abuse?" And to me it's quite simple, the one sees a guy behave like a psychopath in front of his child, chasing a Cat around the Kitchen (after already drop kicking the Cat) and then slaps the Cat around the head. While the other incident is someone saying the N word, which yes it's a really bad word to deliberately use to offend a black person, I'm not denying that, but you've got problems if you seriously think saying the N word is worse than physically attacking a Cat. I'm prepared for people to disagree with me on this, but I honestly think in these cases actions definitely speak louder than words.

Racism is racism, something being the least racist version of something, is still racist, trying to make light of it by basically saying ‘well, at least he didn’t kill a black guy’ is so backward it’s unreal, a very typical white response though, thinking a black person should let racism go because it isn’t that bad to you

Is there also such a thing as a "Very typical Black response" or would that be considered racist? Last edited by Alf; 28-06-2022 at 11:04 PM. |

I am saying that people are so obsessed with people saying something racist than they are with black people actually being murdered because of the colour of their skin. And to me I think that is backward, but maybe that's very white of me who knows. Personally I don't care what the prejudice is, I feel like it should be addressed if it's verbal, but do I think it should be involving the Media and law enforcement more than actual violent crimes? No, look at how little coverage that Azeem Rafiq in the Cricket has had lately, and there is alleged violent outbursts in that case.
