They launched it this morning. Middle of the night for a lot of America and it was pitch-black. You'd have thought they would consider giving the public the best chance of watching it, given its importance.

if the weather is best
they will go in the middle of the night.

Safety matters with these expensive rockets.

What a waste of money.

There's nothing or nobody there for us to colonise or steal from.

Crew announced for Artemis 2, which will be a trip around the Moon (won't land).

Article written by ChatGPT.

Quote:
NASA's Artemis 2 mission, scheduled to launch in November 2024, is set to send a crew of four astronauts to space. The crew was announced in 2023 and is comprised of Gregory R. Wiseman, Victor J. Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen.

Gregory R. Wiseman, a former U.S. Navy test pilot and NASA astronaut, will serve as the mission commander for Artemis 2. This will be Wiseman's second spaceflight, having previously flown to the International Space Station (ISS) in 2014 as part of Expedition 40/41.

Victor J. Glover, a former U.S. Navy test pilot and NASA astronaut, will serve as the pilot for Artemis 2. This will also be Glover's second spaceflight, having previously flown to the ISS as part of SpaceX's Crew-1 mission in 2020.

Christina Koch, a former electrical engineer and NASA astronaut, will serve as a mission specialist for Artemis 2. This will be Koch's second spaceflight, having previously spent 328 days on the ISS as part of Expedition 59/60/61 in 2019-2020. Koch set a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman during her time on the ISS.

Jeremy Hansen, a former Canadian Air Force pilot and astronaut with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), will also serve as a mission specialist for Artemis 2. This will be Hansen's first spaceflight, and he will become the first Canadian astronaut to travel beyond low Earth orbit.

The Artemis 2 mission is the first crewed test flight of the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. The mission will test the spacecraft's systems and capabilities in preparation for future crewed missions to the moon. During the mission, the Orion spacecraft will travel to a distance of approximately 40,000 miles from the moon before returning to Earth. This will allow NASA scientists to test the spacecraft's heat shield, navigation systems, and other critical components under real-world conditions.

In addition to testing the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket, the Artemis 2 mission will also conduct a number of scientific experiments. These experiments will help NASA scientists better understand the moon's environment, geology, and potential resources. The data collected during the Artemis 2 mission will be used to plan future missions to the moon and develop technologies for sustainable lunar exploration.

The Artemis 2 mission represents a major milestone in NASA's efforts to return humans to the moon and establish a sustainable lunar presence. With the crew of Wiseman, Glover, Koch, and Hansen, NASA scientists and engineers are working tirelessly to prepare for this historic mission, and the world will be watching as the Orion spacecraft and the SLS rocket lift off from Earth and embark on their journey to the moon.

The basic problem with manned spaceflight is there is nowhere else to go in the Solar System that is hospitable, and the further you travel from Earth the more difficult and costly it is to keep people alive.
